Nutmeg's Surgery & Vet Bills

Donation protected
This is Nutmeg. She's an old girl, probably in her teens. Truth be told, I don't know much about where she's been, what adventures she's had, who she's loved (and who has loved her). I do know that she's affectionate, sweet, cuddly, homeless... and sick.

Nutmeg showed up a few weeks back. It's not uncommon for my neighbourhood to have strays, ferals, and some owned-but-outdoors cats. I figured she was the latter kind, having not had seen her before.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem like the case. She's dreadfully thin. I started putting food out for her and she'd wolf it down. She was having a hard time breathing -- she was sneezing and she had a runny nose. Since it was getting to be low 40's overnight, I decided to bring her in... and start working on her as-yet-unknown-to-me laundry list of problems.

Unfortunately, the vet didn't have good news. In addition to being terribly malnourished and having roundworm, she's also got two infections. She has at least three teeth almost abscessed, maybe four. The second infection is either a byproduct of the infection from her teeth, or she has an upper respiratory infection. Right now, we don't know.

And lastly?

She has a heart murmor. Which is going to make taking care of her teeth more complicated.

On the upside? She doesn't have FIV or Kitty AIDS. Small miracle.

Right now we're taking it slow. Getting rid of fleas, ticks, roundworm -- that's the easy bit. Making sure she has plenty of food to get back to a healthy weight. We have antibiotics every 12 hours for the infection in her mouth (and hopefully the other infection, too). She got her first round of vaccinations.

The vet's already decided that the bad teeth have to go. We might get lucky and not have to do anything about her heart, but that's... still so far in the future that right now it doesn't do much good to think about it.

Now the reason I'm here, asking money from you? I can't afford surgery for her teeth. I can barely afford the unexpected vet visit (the initial visit was just shy of $300 for everything (visit, tests, more tests, vaccinations, and medications) -- a nice chunk of change). She'll need at least two more vet visits in the forseeable future, plus the surgery. Nutmeg's been through so much... I want to make whatever reaminder of a life she has to be as good as possible. She doesn't deserve to be miserable.
