Calabria. Italy Study Abroad Program

Donation protected
Hello family and friends!

In May of 2012, I will be traveling to Calabria, Italy, with fellow graduate students in Loyola's study abroad program. We will be taking part in a class that studies the issue of poverty from an international perspective at the University of Calabria.

This 3 credit course will address the social problem of poverty in a range of countries and analyze the response to people living in poverty at the individual and societal levels. We will also discuss what future responses might consist of. The theoretical frameworks to define poverty will be discussed as well as how societies, and the American society in particular, have defined and historically responded to the problem of poverty. Poverty as it is shaped by social institutions, such as; as the economy, the political arena, family, religion, and social welfare will be analyzed in detail, as well as how poverty in turn shapes these institutions and their responses to people in need.

I am very much looking forward to this class and trip. Studying abroad gives you chances to learn and explore in unique ways. Unfortunately, the fees associated with studying abroad can get quite hefty. I'm hoping to raise money through fund-raising to help defray some of the costs of the trip for myself and my fellow classmates. If you are able to, please donate to this cause. Any amount is helpful (even if it is as small as $0.50), and all donations are greatly appreciated!

I will keep this page regularly updated with news about our travel plans, fund-raising accomplishments, and any other useful information!

Thank you so much for reading and for donating if you are able to.

Best wishes,

 Alainya
