Cold Spring Park Community Garden

The Cold Spring Park Neighborhood:

Cold Spring Park Historic Neighborhood, Inc. is a 501(c)(3). Our historic Milwaukee neighborhood is bounded by the north side of Highland Blvd. and the south side of Vliet Street, from 27th to 35th Streets. The neighborhood includes the State and Federally-designated McKinley Blvd. Historic District, from 27th to 34th Street.  The garden itself is located on the corner of 28th Street and McKinley Blvd.

The Cold Spring Park Garden:

The neighborhood organization has operated this city-owned lot on McKinley Blvd. as a community garden for many years. Currently, we hold a permit from the Milwaukee Urban Gardens (MUG) program run for the City by Groundwork Milwaukee. Consistent with the turn-of-the-Century character of the McKinley Blvd Historic District, the oval design is reminiscent of the oval in the 1800’s Cold Spring Park race track. Authorized by the Board of Directors and the Membership in 2012, the Plan has been approved by Groundwork Milwaukee and the City.

Garden Improvement Plan:

Developed in consultation with ADA Chris Ladwig, and the MPD District 3 Community Liaison Officer and the Safe & Sound CPU Coordinator, to meet "Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design" (CEPTD) Program standards, the design is intended to discourage illegal and undesirable activities (drinking, drugs, sex) which had become concerns in the Park, and to encourage use as an attractive and safe public gathering place. It is the only such public green space within the boundaries of the Cold Spring Park Neighborhood, 27th to 35th Streets between Highland Blvd. and Vliet Street.

Partners in the Project:

Located within the 30th Street Industrial Corridor, we are working with Clean Wisconsin, contracted by MMSD to manage, educate residents and raise public awareness about green infrastructure in the Corridor, as well as coordinate installation of rain gardens and rain barrels. Marek Landscaping, a contractor of Clean Wisconsin, developed the Plan and budget estimate. As a model of sustainable water-retentive urban green space, the Plan provides rain gardens, water permeable walks, low maintenance perennial gardens, and a public “gathering green.” We have raised $1700 in contributions of $100 from 17 households.  Neighbors in the immediate vicinity of the Park have reviewed, improved, and enthusiastically approved the final plan. The owner of the house to the immediate east of the lot has agreed to share his water supply with a split meter provided and installed by Milwaukee Water Works. The Cold Spring Park HNI Garden committee and neighbors will work with Marek on implementation of the Plan and will maintain the Garden.
