Powerful Beyond Measure  (PBM) is a 100% volunteer run organization that implements efforts towards youth development - focusing on creative, academic, professional, civic, social and personal growth by strategically integrating the arts, entertainment, sports and media industries into programming. Our strategy is to utilize these influential fields to reach targeted urban youth, via multi-dimensional services..

C.A.P.E. League is our year-round enrichment program created to impact the lives of youth ages 11-17 with experience and education beyond the classroom. We are an inclusive program and open to ALL children; however, we particularly recruit youth who are classified as “at-risk”; within the foster care system;  have ADHD, developmental or learning challenges; are experiencing self-esteem, social or behavioral issues; or part of single parent and/or lower-income families.

Each year, members work on a special project as a group. The project serves as a learning opportunity, chance for members to use and enhance skills, and an occasion to build self-esteem, team spirit and sense of accomplishment. For more than a year, our kids have been working on an Arts & Cultural Magazine. The project was designed to allow the kids to explore their creativity, learn new skills, develop appreciation for and tolerance to different cultures, enhance their writing skills and walk away with a finished product to add to their portfolio.

The Magazine explores two areas:
Arts – film, literature, painting, music, dance, poetry, theater, sculpture, fashion, writing, photography, etc.
Culture - the various cultures and cultural expressions reflected through different nationalities, ethincities, religions, DC and New York locales, etc.

The magazine is broken down into editorials, interviews, pictorials, reviews, listing, specials and news items. Amongst others things, the kids have reported on arts exhibits, Ethiopian and Spanish restaurants, African American relevant films, performances at Jewish and African theater, the Danish Embassy, various dance performances,  an awards weekend for shcolar athletes, arts festivals, poetry groups, community events, etc.  They have interviewed recording artists, photographers, arts administrators, community leaders, etc. The project has included: writing/photogrpaher workshops, interviews, field trips, classes, computer use and production hours. We have put the kids in classes with the Washington Post and even put the "Creative Director" in photo classses and bought them a SLR camera, We wanted the kids to have real experiences related to running and producing a magazine. We have had real experts to come in to teach the kids to do the following: photography, interviewing, production, editorial writing, layout, reviewing, editing, etc.

We have been trying to finish this proect for over 1 year...but lack of funding has prevented us from the following:
- Our finale trip to New York: It was originally supposed to be an overnight trip, to both visit a real magazine and review the museums, theater and various cultures of New York - and also do their ad sales presentations for businesses.  Plus, we wanted to treat the kids to a New York experience to their dedicated work for over a year! But because of budget, we are changing to a day trip.

- Printing the Magazine: It costs to physically print the magazine. Early this year, we took our kids on their first college trip and also added youth - so lack of funding has prevented us from having enough to print the magazine, professionally and have them see the process.

- Workshops: We had to cut off any workshops that cost money, as we approach the end of the year

We are trying to now have our New York trip on Dec. 22nd to both visit a magazine, experience the holiday merriment and raise enough money over the next month. The rest of the funds raised will go towards printing, workshops and production.
