We're hoping to bring Rev. Dr. Bernard LaFayette Jr. to our school, the University of Washington.

Dr. LaFayette is a longtime civil rights activist and organizer. He was a leader of the sit-ins that desegregated Nashville in 1960, he was beaten in Montgomery, Alabama as a Freedom Rider in 1961, and was a leader of the voting rights movement in Selma, Alabama that culminated in the "Bloody Sunday" march in 1965.

He is also the author of his autobiography In Peace and Freedom: My Journey in Selma. He is perhaps the world's foremost authority on strategies of non-violent social change and resistance. LaFayette has received various accolades and honors including the Distinguished Senior Scholar-in Residence from Emory University.

In his public talk at our University, LaFayette would discuss his involvement in the Civil Rights movement and the importance of nonviolence as an approach to positive social change. He will detail his role in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) as well being appointed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as the national program administrator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). LaFayette will share memorable moments and an inspirational outlook through his candor, sincerity, and optimism.
