Brad Horen Fund for Hana & Ana

Donation protected
Chef Brad Horen passed away suddenly on Sunday, March 6, 2016. He was a great husband, father, son brother and chef.  He is survived by his loving wife Junko, and young daughters Hana and Ana.

From Sous Chef to Executive Chef, Brad earned his place as one of BC’s most talented Chefs. He was a successful Chef of the Year, Iron Chef competitor, multi-medalist at the Culinary Olympics, winner of countless awards and a multi-year Captain of the Canadian Culinary Team. He served former presidents, famous hockey players and the corporate world’s elite.

As outlined in the recently published 'Food Artisans of the Okanagan' by Jennifer Cockrall-King, he credited his grandmother and mother for his interest in cooking.  "'There was always something interesting going on in the kitchen.' he says.  Horen attended the culinary arts program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, and right away he exhibited both culinary passion and endurance, working in the kitchen of the Shaw Conference Centre and being chosen as a member of the Culinary Team Alberta.  In 2002, Horen and team won what is known as the World Cup at a major international culinary competition in Luxembourg. Horen would go on to be captain of the much-medalled Culinary Team Alberta from 2008-2012.

Horen then left for Calgary, working first at the Westin and then as the executive chef at Catch, a well-regarded seafood restaurant opened by chef Michael Noble, for four years.  He then headed up the kitchen at Laurel Point in Victoria and opened the Ottawa Convention Centre before moving to Kelowna.  He became Executive Chefs at the Manteo Resort Waterfront Hotel & Villas, with its Smack DAB wood-fired pizza and local craft brew."

Because of his commitment to his family, and the Okanagan community, the Okanagan Chefs Association is spearheading this fundraising drive to provide financial support to Hana & Ana to be put in trust for their future education goals.  Still young children, we can only imagine the strong work ethic and culinary influence Brad instilled in his girls.

Donations will be moved into a trust account and monitored by the Okanagan Chefs Association.

Throughout his too brief career, Brad touched many people's lives both in and out of the kitchen and our efforts here are to give our thanks to both Brad and his family.

The Okanagan Chefs Association thank everyone for their contribution.
