Black Girls Summit

Our names are Dr. Arlene Arias, Chantae Campbell and Robert Goodrich, and we are co-founders of a community advocacy group called Radical Advocates for Cross-Cultural Education ( R.A.C.C.E.). Based in Waterbury, CT, our mission is to challenge systems of oppression by advocating for culturally competent educational practices.

Our decision to embark on this journey was fueled by a profound concern for and dedication to the well being of our city’s  youth. We believe the only way to achieve the greatest amount of change is to operate within a highly specialized framework dedicated solely to educational practices.

Pursuant to our goal, we are hosting a Black Girls Summit on August 8, 2015. This is a community event that will focus on the socio-cultural phenomena influencing behavior patterns for girls of color in our school district and the district’s and community’s response to their needs.

We will have experts present on implicit and explicit bias. We will also investigate national, state, and local disciplinary policies and their consequences. Our panels of school professionals and community stakeholders will discuss their roles and personal experiences with girls of color in the community, and facilitate dialogue that leads to solutions for our students’ most pressing needs.

We would love for you to partner with us as we strive to improve our community.

Sincerely,
Arlene, Chantae and Robbie
