Animals are abused in a staggering 88% of families where violence is an issue, according to The Animal Welfare Society. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that 71% of pet owners entering domestic violence shelters have reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control their victims. Sadly 65% of pet owners in these situations stay in danger longer because of fear for their animals’ safety. 52% of victims in shelters felt they had no choice but to leave their beloved pets with their batterers…

Maine is a pioneer in the legal protection of animals in domestic violence situations, however with statutes in place to include animals in protection from abuse orders Maine still has NO PET FRIENDLY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTERS in the entire state that allow families to escape with their animals. It is not an issue a lot of people think about unless they are in the situation but for those suffering at the hands of another this roadblock sometimes turns into a life threatening reality.
