Autumn's run for Evan

"Wherever you go, go with all your heart."
Evan Michael Moeller was only 9 years old, but he embodied this sentiment to its fullest. He gave everything his all; family, friends, sports. His heart was 120% dedicated to everything and everyone he was involved with. He loved life and he had a heart so full of love. He had a lot of people to share that love with, too. Evan was the youngest of three children to Amy & Carl Moeller, and the youngest of 16 grandchildren to my grandparents, Cathy and Doug Moeller. He was everything to our family.

On April 24th, 2012, Evan's heart gave out while he was on the basketball court. In an instant, he was gone. Our family forever changed.

In a sad twist of irony, I was all too familiar with the stories of young athletes dying suddenly as a result of an undetected heart condition.  At the time, I was an anchor and reporter at WJRT ABC 12 in Flint, MI. I was covering the death of Thomas Smith, a standout athlete from Flushing, MI. Thomas died suddenly in January 2011 from an undetected heart condition. Thomas' family created the Thomas Smith Memorial Foundation to help prevent all families from suffering the loss of a child, by providing early detection & education for teenage heart ailments. Like Evan, Thomas was an avid athlete, and from the stories I've heard – he had a heart full of love to share with the world. Also like Evan, no heart problems had ever been detected in any of the sports physicals that he went through.

On April 24th, 2012 I was no longer a reporter covering Thomas' story, I was now part of a family grappling with a similar loss. As a reporter, you cover a lot of stories and meet many amazing people, but there was something uniquely special about Thomas' parents. I felt deeply touched by their story and inspired by their efforts to turn tragedy into triumph.  It was only later that our families became connected by a similar tragedy. Evan's parents and siblings embody many of the same qualities. They've done so much good in the wake of Evan's death. Like Thomas' family, they're changing the world for the better.

Thomas’ story changed me as a person and as a reporter. Evan’s life AND death inspire me to give everything my all and create change for the better. This is just one small way of doing that. In memory of Evan and Thomas, I am going to run the Chicago Marathon on October 11th. 26.2 miles. Please join me in helping to raise awareness about sudden cardiac death among our children. Thank you in advance for your generous donations.
