From Spinal Injury to Graduate School

In 2007 I was involved in an accident that changed my life forever: I was struck by an SUV while skateboarding in a bicycle lane. I acquired a complete spinal cord injury, paralyzed from the chest down, and was rendered wheelchair bound. I was only 20 years old. Although making the transition to a new lifestyle was difficult, the experience with therapists and counselors throughout rehabilitation made it worthwhile and has significantly shaped who I am today. Since becoming rehabilitated I have strived toward a career in which I can have a positive influence on those overcoming similar, life-changing circumstances.
A year after rehabilitation and adjusting to my new life I started taking classes at Waycross College (a local community college) and upon graduation with an associates degree in psychology, continued to Valdosta State University. I recently graduated with a 3.8 GPA and a B.A. degree in psychology and have been accepted into the M.S. Rehabilitation Counseling Program at Georgia State University in Atlanta (classes starting August 2014). I am now one step closer

1. Tuition, student fees, and books
2. The move to Atlanta (4 hours away from where I live now in Blackshear, GA)
3. Handicap accessible apartment (deposit and first month's rent)
Any donation amount will significantly help toward my education and achieve my ultimate goal to helping and many individuals like myself who have suffered from traumatic injury: build optimism, regain independence, integration back into society, and to have an overall satisfaction on life.
