TEFL Trip to Croatia

Dear Friends and Family,

For the third summer in a row, I will be flying to Croatia for a two-week mission trip. I and the other members of the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) team will teach English to Croatian elementary, middle, and high school students. Not only will we be coaching our students in conversational English skills, but we will also be giving them the Gospel on a daily basis. This year our curriculum borrows from C.S. Lewis's powerful Chronicles of Narnia series, drawing lessons from this most understandable of Christian allegories.

The need for the Gospel is overwhelming in Croatia. Its people view religion of all forms as empty tradition. They see God as an impersonal (and possibly fictional) entity. Even though the country is divided into Catholic, Orthodox, and Muslim camps, their faiths have no real meaning and little impact on their daily lives. The older generation clings to the traditions that kept them sane during the Bosnian conflict. The younger generation is disillusioned by the hypocrisy they see in the churches, especially the church leadership, and search for truth in Eastern and Western faiths alike.

The people of this recovering nation do not trust outsiders. It takes many years to build relationships that lead to Gospel-centered conversations. I have only gone for two years, but the friendships I have with several unsaved Croatian teenagers are precious to me. Teaching English has opened the door for deeper conversations with my students. This year I hope to build on these priceless relationships so I can remind my friends of the hope of the Gospel.

The TEFL team offers a service: teaching English to Croatian students hoping to get jobs in an international market. We use conversation coaching as a vehicle to explain biblical concepts. Every teaching session includes a fifteen-minute chapel time where the Gospel is presented. At the end of a week of class, our students walk away with a better understanding of conversational English and, most importantly, the message of the Gospel.

Please pray for me as I return to Croatia and build upon the friendships I've established in previous years. Pray that I will effectively communicate the Truth to my students and that they will see a difference in my life that will attract them to the God I serve. And please pray for our team's safety as we travel to and from the states as well as within the country.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support.
