MiHomestead will put the law to work for your homestead, not against it!

FAQs
1. Who are homesteaders?

Homesteaders want or need to use their homes to help sustain themselves. They are urban gardeners and backyard chicken enthusiasts, as well as off-the-grid country homesteaders who would make Laura Ingalls proud.

2. What does MiHomestead do?

MiHomestead:
1) lists homesteading-friendly properties and communities;
2) provides clear legal information relevant to homesteaders (including access to homesteading law pros); and
3) collects the shared legal knowledge to secure and empower the homesteading community

3. Why is this important, and not just to homesteaders?

There are two main responses to economic collapse and uneven recovery: increase government investing in the people and existing infrastructure; or allow people to do more to sustain themselves. But governments (from the local to the national levels) are tightening their belts, so more and more people are seeking to (re)skill and repurpose their homes with a focus on resiliency, self-sufficiency and more control over what they eat. Victory Gardens and backyard chickens were encouraged as our patriotic duty for much of the 20th century, but changing land use priorities and more focus on large grocery stores and large scale agriculture led to legal changes that made it harder for people to sustain themselves as they had.

Homesteading in the 21st century helps families and communities sustain themselves, particularly with shrinking public dollars for social services.

4. Where will MiHomestead focus?

Initially MiHomestead will focus on the states with the strongest laws and regulations in favor of homesteading activities. Property listings and requests by users will direct the development of the site.

5. When will MiHomestead be ready to use?

We are working hard to get ready to beta test this fall. But the "when" will also be determined by the success of this campaign. The sooner we meet our funding goal, the sooner MiHomestead can be bootstrapped to beta! Please support our roll out by donating what you can and helping spread the word!
