Hello! We are Rachel and Jillian. We met in 2007 and have been best friends ever since. We both share a passion for helping others in diverse settings; Rachel being a residential coordinator for an organization supporting people with Autism, and Jillian being a nurse at a Psychiatric hospital and community hospital. Both of us have always wanted to volunteer in Africa so this year we decided to start the process and do it! We have been approved with International Volunteer Headquarters (IVH) Kenya Special Needs Project for May 2015. (www.volunteerhq.org/volunteer-in-kenya) We are so excited to go!
The Kenyan culture believes that children should be able to contribute while at home and provide for themselves when they reach adulthood. However, there are increasing numbers of children born with mental or physical disabilities who do not have access to supports and services making this difficult or next to impossible. As a volunteer, we will provide daily hands on support, disability education among families and local communities, physiotherapy and rehab, ADL's, and training for families.
We have some finances that we would love some help with such as our round trip flight which can be close to $2000/per person, registration fee which is $370/per person, and a Kenyan VISA.
Any help would be so much appreciated. We are so excited to finally be doing this.. as it is a lifelong dream AND we get to meet and help others along the way.
