Summer 2014: MU Journalism Abroad (NY)

My name is Alexis Johnson, and I am a junior at the University of Missouri School of Journalism studying strategic communication.

I believe in the power of overcoming circumstances and have never allowed my financial situation to hinder me from pursuing my dreams. Coming from a single-parent household, I've already defied societal expectations in making it to college, let alone studying at the first (and best) journalism institution in the world.

I have been given the opportunity to study in New York City this upcoming summer as part of the School of Journalism's Global At-Home Program (learn about it here: http://www.mujournalismabroad.com/new-york.html). This program will allow me to travel to New York for the first time, live on the NYU campus and take courses. I've also been offered an internship to work at The Wendy Williams Show! 

An opportunity like this is something I've dreamed about since I was a child. I have always had a passion for television and plan to have a career in entertainment public relations post-graduation. That's why this New York opportunity is so special and important to me.

That's why I'm hoping you can help. While I can pull some of the funds together to take advantage of this opportunity, I can't manage it all on my own. I am a full-time student, working over 20 hours a week (between two minimum-wage jobs) and it isn't going to be enough.

If I can raise $5,000 through this website, I'll be able to have the experience of a lifetime and set myself up to see my dreams become a reality. I've been working all of my life for something like this, and now it's all so close!
