Sweet Peas Surgery

Donation protected
Several years ago I got a phone call that changed my life. A friend knew of a dog that had been thrown from a truck and left to die. Luckily, a Good Samaritan happened to see the dog and rushed her to the vet. The dog was so weak from days of starvation and lack of water, she could barely hold her head up.
The vet thought the dog was a lost cause and suggested putting her down. Panic stricken, the woman pleaded for time to find someone that could help the dog. She told her friend, who told my friend, who called me.

At the time I was living in an apartment with 2 cats and was a little hesitant to bring a dog into the mix. I went to pick up the dog, not knowing much about it, other than it's injuries. When I arrived at the vets office I found out it was a pitbull. My heart sank. I thought there was no way I could have a pitbull in my small apartment with 2 cats. I am ashamed to admit I had been swayed by the unjust media coverage the breed is given. The dog quickly changed my biased mind! Both of her left legs had been injured, she couldn't walk. I carried her outside the vets office and placed her in some grass. She weakly lifted her head, and beamed at me.

My heart melted.

Sweet Pea had arrived.

The plan was to nurse her back to health, then find her a good home. As I was standing in the checkout line buying a jumbo bag of dog food and a new dog bed, I realized she was home. I spent the next 2 weeks carrying her around and helping her go to the bathroom. I took her to another doctor, who gave an unsure prognosis. She might walk, she might not, only time will tell.

She could pull herself around using her front legs and wanted SO badly to play. My good friend and his beagle, Eddie, were just what she needed. Sweet Pea would scoot around their yard trying to chase after Eddie. She was so full of life and love. Finally, she stood. I cried. Then she ran. I cried even more!

I will never know for sure what brought her to the point where that kind Samaritan found her. All I know is that she is safe, she is loved, she is my best friend. She has brought unmeasurable joy and love into my life. She has shattered my unfair view of pitbulls. She welcomes me home every day with smiles and kisses. She ends every day snuggled up next to me as my little spoon.

Her love humbles me.

Some people say dogs are just pets. They are wrong. Dogs are family. Sweet Pea is the kindest, gentlest soul I have ever come across. The love of my life.

Seven years later, she still walks a little goofy. Well, she is goofy. Her front left foot has suffered repeated injuries. She wears a little shoe to protect her foot. I often put bandages on the foot the cushion it when she walks. She hates the bandages. She likes to chew the bandages off. Apparently, she has chewed and swallowed many bandages. She is currently spending the night at the vets office recovering from surgery.

After days of nausea and not eating, she endured lots of poking, prodding and X-rays. Her wonder-vet found she had a blockage in her stomach. Her intestines were damaged, and part of them had to be removed.  She is going blind. Undoubtedly, she has the best vet around. She is getting the best care possible. But that care isn't free. Please help me continue to give this amazing dog the best chance at recovery. She has given me so much, and asks for so little in return.
