About Us:
Introduction: Cynthia Haley
Like any child, my need for adventure started early in life. Pretending that the floor was lava, building pillow forts with my sister, and making my own costumes were just a couple of things I did to make my own adventure. But as I kept getting older and my years of school zoomed past, I began to look for opportunities that could possibly fulfill my need for a real adventure. It wasn't until I had been accepted into the University of Arizona that I finally realized I had found my answer. With me being a first generation, low-income minority student, I felt that studying abroad would not only help me out academically but also personally and professionally.
The Trident Language Program in Japan that is offered at University of Arizona is an excellent program that fits my current needs. With the program offering about twenty-one hours per week of both culture and language classes, I will be able to satisfy some of my requirements for my East Asian Studies major. Thus allowing me to fulfill my academic goals. In terms of more personal goals, this program will help out in numerous ways. The first way it can help me is through its unique feature of weekly field trips. With the program being set within Nagoya, the third largest incorporated city, program students can travel to a wide range of places such as shopping districts, museums, sporting events, restaurants and festivals. But in terms of the actual field trips, students are able to visit landmarks of Nagoya including Nagoya Castle, Atsuta Shrine, and the neighboring city of Kyoto. This feature allows me to experience the Japanese culture in a more immersed way then other programs. But the most helpful feature for my personal goals is the option of home stay. I personally feel that the home stay option is important because it allows students to interact on a more hands-on approach and gives the students a memorable experience that they will never forget. But the reason I feel these two options will fulfill my personal goals is because these will help me become more outgoing, interactive, independent, and help me become more fluent in Japanese. Which in turn will help me out in my professional goals. With my professional goal being a job within the United Nations or an embassy within Japan, this experience in Japan will help me gain skills and knowledge that is required for those kinds of jobs. All in all, this program enables me to achieve a wide range of goals that I need to be successful.
Now the only thing that stands in my way is financial aid. Your personal donations will help me tremendously with this aid problem. Even though we don't reach our fundraising goal, every bit helps out alot. Thank you so much for your help!

Introduction: Brittni Epple
In the words of Nelson Mandela, "It always seems impossible until it's done."  Going to Japan and studying abroad, in general, is one of my most important life goals, and for the longest time I thought doing so was an impossible dream. In the past I have attempted to study abroad but could not make it due to financial hardships.
Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a low income and first generation university student, like myself. I will be the first person in my family to go abroad to another country, to take on a second language and to experience another culture first hand. The opportunity to study abroad will allow me to improve my Japanese, but help me become more independent.
I have been interested in Japan since my primary education, and also the research, environment, history and popular culture. At an early age I knew I wanted to become a Veterinarian; it was during my senior year of high school when I was finally allowed to have pets: Miss Molly and Siam. They are my life, my pride and my joy, because they have helped me cope with many hardships in life. As time went by, I noticed one of my cats, Miss Molly, was always sick with a respiratory disease. These events sparked an interest in me to pursue feline research. Upon having previous interest in Japan, I learned that Japan is known for having a huge cat population of 7,300,000 in regards to the size of the country, they also have much more research than others, which raised my interest in this country even further. I feel that I have personally placed higher expectations on Japan and need to see for myself why this country is so fascinating to me. Much of my knowledge of Japan has been through classes, the internet, and books. Study abroad would be a great life experience and I feel that the study abroad program will impact my personal development, I believe that I will gain more skills in communication and become more open minded.
The Trident Language Program is a four-week language and culture intensive summer program located in Nagoya. The language program has direct UA credit and I will be staying with a homestay family through the duration of the program. The Trident program offers more opportunities to use everyday language and cultural experiences such as: trips to the historical city of Kyoto and other locations; I selected the program specifically for its extracurricular activities in comparison to other programs. I believe that the program will be a more memorable experience if I am placed with a family. Interacting in the daily lives of Japanese natives would help me understand Japan's customs better, because I can see how their family operates in comparison to American family. I would also have more opportunity to speak with them one on one. With my major in Veterinary Science and my minor in Japanese, the courses offered will also fulfill my upper division requirement for both degrees. Along with gaining these credits I will be able to graduate only a semester late. Studying abroad with the Trident Language program meets my personal and academic needs more accurately than the other programs offered.
I hope that studying abroad will open new doors for not only myself but will also inspire my family and friends to do the same. My hope is that it will teach me more about the world outside the one I am familiar with and open my mind to the new and unique experiences I will have there. I plan to apply what I have learned through studying abroad to future decisions and share my discovery with everyone. I am unique in many ways: low income, first generation, multiracial and pursuing veterinary science with a minor in Japanese and feel that I have much to offer to students who are like me.
