Vet Bills for Molly

Molly Is Currently Being Hospitalized

A week ago Molly was so vibrant and full of excitement for life, going on long walks, getting yummy treats, and cuddling with me in bed at night. Life was pretty good. I noticed a week ago that she looked thinner, like she had a waistline, and thought to myself how all my hard work walking the dogs every day - as weather permitted - had paid off. However even though she was so vibrant and full of excitement for life, I noticed that over the week she kept losing more weight. Then she stopped eating all together, wouldn't take any treats, just sniffed them and looked away. It broke my heart to watch this happen to her. She was beginning to lag behind me when I walked her, and all of a sudden I could feel and see some of her ribs more easily. She had stopped eating all together, and hadn't pooped in two days. So I got her to the vet yesterday.

She had lost 10 lbs since her last visit, I am sure half must have been from me walking her and feeding her less, and half was from what ever was happening to her now. She was extremely dehydrated, and so last night they started an IV, and hospitalized her today, and are hospitalizing her tomorrow too. She weighed 28lbs when I brought her in yesterday, and has gained back 3.5 lbs in water weight, she ate a little bit of food earlier today, and I just cooked her some rice. I am letting it cool down before I try to feed it to her.

Molly recently turned 9 years old, her breed and size has a life span of about 12-14 years, so she is a senior, she has grown some gray hairs, and I like to call her "Molly Graybeard" - it's her official pirate name. But I feel there is still good life in her yet, and that everything is in God's hands right now.

Shocked

Originally, Molly's prognosis was dire, possible Kidney failure, and I cried so hard. I looked at the costs of her treatment, and decided that even if she only got one more good year, she should have it. I am determined to help her in what ever way that I can. I went back to pick her up last night after an hour and half of IV fluids, and subcutaneous fluids pumped under her skin to help her rehydrate. She was also put on all kinds of medication, and the doctor did a urine test and discovered she may actually have Addison's Disease, or Hypoadrenocorticism.

Addison's Disease

"Addison's disease is a disorder that occurs when your body produces insufficient amounts of certain hormones produced by your adrenal glands. In Addison's disease, your adrenal glands produce too little cortisol and often insufficient levels of aldosterone as well.

Also called adrenal insufficiency, Addison's disease occurs in all age groups and affects both sexes. Addison's disease can be life-threatening.

Treatment for Addison's disease involves taking hormones to replace the insufficient amounts being made by your adrenal glands, in order to mimic the beneficial effects produced by your naturally made hormones." -Mayo Clinic

Some Financials

The current illness that has fallen so fast and fiercely upon my Molly has not been easy to diagnose. Its rather a rare condition, and thankfully its totally treatable. Because the vet clinic don't have staff over night, I have to go and drop her off in the morning, and pick her up at night. They have been accepting deposits from me towards the total estimated costs, however I am looking at a huge final bill. It's over $1000 now, and not looking to get any cheaper. I want to do a fund raiser to help me pay off this bill. I will post another blog that has all the costs spelled out tmrw.

I originally planned to get both my dogs set up on the Banfield Wellness plan, and now that I have a roommate I could afford it. However I can't afford this initial bill. Much of the treatment that Molly is receiving is covered under the Banfield Special Care Wellness plan that I have put her on, and I am receiving some discounts for all the services, care and medication through that wellness plan. Thankfully this will help offset the high costs of everything. I will be paying $40 a month for 12/mo for most of the care she has already received, which is $480 yr. She will also need a shot every 25-days if this is Addison's Disease, and that will run me around $40 each time too, that will run me apx $584 a year. I have just enuf in my budget to cover that for the year, all spread out.

However I do need help immediately to help me cover the costs of her diagnosis tests, and initial treatment and hospitalization, antibiotics, and IV fluids. Keep an eye out for the estimate of costs and her treatment plan tmrw.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
