Miss Delaney needs help.

In December of 2013, my four-year-old pup Laney started acting different from normal. We noticed that she was very lethargic for about a week, didn't want to get up and move around a lot, which was very odd as she has always been an incredibly active dog. After that, her little body began to bloat up, her belly and her back legs swelling to nearly twice their size overnight. We took her to our local vet, who couldn't figure out what was wrong with her, so she was referred to a special care clinic where, after extensive testing, it was discoverd that she is suffering from Lyme's disease.

We have been treating her for it since then, giving her daily doses of three different medications to stabilize her blood pressure and help fight the disease, and while she has her good days and bad, we were told by the vet that if she can make it through the first six months of treatment, there's a very good chance she'll make it. However... her treatment does come at a steep price. Along with the initial $1,000 we had to pay in December to figure out what was wrong with her in the first place, we are now paying roughly $150-$350 every other week or so for her medications, as well as to get her abdomen tapped and have fluid drained out of her belly, which causes her such stress and discomfort when he bloats up.

Laney is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever known. She is so loving and friendly, she "talks" to us when we get home after being away for a while, and she'll give you "hugs" if if you ask her to, where she pushes the side of her face against yours and rubs against it. Ever since being diagnosed, though, she has become much more quiet, and much less active than she was before, constantly uncomfortable in her poor fluid-filled body. Tapping her and draining the fluid does give her so much relief-- the vet doesn't even need to sedate her, as soon as the fluid starts draining, she completely relaxes, feeling such comfort in getting rid of it. But it's not cheap. And some weeks, she bloats back up after only a few days, and we need to take her twice in one week, a process that costs $128 dollars on it's own.

We're just asking for a little bit of help. It's been three months that we've been dealing with this illness, and hopefully, after another three, she'll be in the clear, happy and healthy again, and we won't have to make these weekly-to-bi-weekly trips to the vet to get her tapped. But until then, the bills keep piling up.

Here are some images of our lovely Laney when she is filled with fluid, before being tapped and drained.

The following photos are how she looks after her belly has been drained. Typically, there is a total of just under 3 litres drained from her abdomen every one-two weeks. After she's drained, she is nothing but bones, as her appetite has waned due to the illness.

And lastly, I am adding some images of the reciepts from the vet so you can get an idea of the financial burden this has indeed put on us.

The first evaluation at our local vet, before she was referred to a specialist.

And the following are various trips to the vet we've had to make since then, to get her tapped and drained, for medication refills, check ups, etc. This is roughly half of the many trips we've made for her.

Our little girl is worth every penny we've spent on her, and every one we'll spend over the next few months. But there's no denying that we could use a little bit of help to get her well again. Thank you for taking the time to read Laney's story, and thank you for any support and help you may be able to provide. Even if you're unable to provide any funding, just spreading the word about Laney would be more than we could ever ask for. `
