hello, my name is ryan shay and i'm 19 years old, 20 in one month! i was a great athlete, i played every sport in school, soccer and hockey very competitively. in hockey i moved away from home in high school to play major midget. my body was in shape, strong, lean and such a great tool. in january of 2013 i got in a car accident, dislocating my c7 vertebrae and causing bad bruising on my spinal cord at the c8 level. because of this i'm a c7 sensory, c8 motor, asia a, complete quadriplegic. meaning paralyzed from nipples down with no movement or sensation, and also limited hand function being a quad. from right off the bat i amazed people with my recovery and strength. trying different things and sports. being called a "super quad" at times. this accident and change has all been tragic but has lead me on a new journey in life, to be a paralympian! already i'm crushing my personal bests and doing great! my coach and a paralympian have already told me it's likely i'll be in rio in only two years! but to do this i need my own race chair which is 6k alone. not too mention training camps and competitions costing between 3k to 6k! that's what this fundraising is for, anything helps. please support me on my road to rio! i will not disappoint!
