Introduction:
Hello! First and foremost, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Juan Pablo Sanchez. I am currently a senior at Easton Area High School. I was born in Colombia, South America. I am a high honors student that is highly involved in extracurricular activities including, but not limited to: DECA, FBLA, Varsity Soccer and the National, Spanish, and French Honor Societies. I will be graduating in June of 2014 and will be majoring in Biochemistry with a premedical intended major (most-likely at Drexel Univeristy). My goal in life is to live a less constrained lifestyle than my parents do and to live the American Dream that has been ingrained in me by my parents.
Why Do I Need Your Help?:
The reason for which I am trying to raise funds is because I will be running to become the North Atlantic Region Vice President for National DECA. These funds will cover my campaign materials ($5,000) , my campaign team's transportation costs to get to Atlanta, Georgia ($2,000) and any other miscellaneous expenses that my candidacy may require ($1,000).
What Is DECA?:
DECA, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for profit international business organization that prepares students to be leaders in the fields of marketing, entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality, fashion, merchandising, accounting, business law, and travel & tourism. The high school division includes over 200,000 members in 5,000 schools. The collegiate division includes over 15,000 members in 200 colleges and universities. Membership spans across the United States, as well as in Canada, China, Germany, Guam, Hong Kong, Korea, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The mission statement of DECA is "DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe."
My DECA Experience:
I would like to tell you all about my experience with DECA, in order to give you a better understanding of what I have done within the organization. I joined the DECA Chapter at the Easton Area High School my freshman year. It seemed exciting and I thought that maybe it could open up my options to what I want to be when I'm older. My own definition of DECA is a competitive based organization, in which you are taught fundamentals that are not taught in the classroom. Some examples of this are teaching you how to speak in front of audiences, preparing you for any type of interview, learning business professionalism ideals and offering many career opportunities. My first competition experience was when I competed at the District 7 Competition and placed 3rd in the Restaurant Food and Service Management event my sophomore year. The competition aspect involves taking a 100 multiple choice test on the branch of business that your event corresponds to and responding to a role play situation, where you are given ten minutes to prepare to present in front of a judge. I then moved on to the PA State Career Development Conference, where I unfortunately did not place. It was such an amazing experience. I had never felt so involved in something before. It gave me the opportunity to network and make new friends. As a junior, I ran to become the President of the Easton Chapter. I was thankfully chosen and I led our chapter to double the amount of members from the previous year. This was a huge accolade because DECA grew in popularity at our high school, which was one of my goals for the club. Later on, I competed at Districts once again and this time I placed 1st. I moved on to States where I placed 5th and qualified for the International Competition Development Conference, where the competition level rises to its maximum because it consists of the best competitors from all over the world. I also ran to be the PA DECA State President my junior year, but unfortunately did not win the election. The International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Anaheim, California was one of my favorite experiences of all time, especially because I had the opportunity to travel across the country and unite with thousands of other compassionate DECA members. As a senior, I have remained the President of our chapter. I plan to accomplish many goals along with my fellow officer team. We have already reached a milestone by registering an astounding 152 members! I have also become an active National DECA Social Media Correspondent where my duties are to connect with DECA members from all over the world and to write a monthly blog on any DECA topic.
What has DECA taught me?:
DECA has taught me the essentials of how to communicate and interact with others. DECA gave me the opportunity to find things within me that I never even knew I had. I learned my love for leadership, my passion for helping others and most importantly, my ability to inspire others. It has boosted my confidence to pursue my life goals. It has also inspired me to want to be successful no matter what I have to do. A personal ideal within our chapter that we have incorporated is the idea of "DECA Family". This is specifically important to me because DECA is my second family. It is where I most feel comfortable and where I have gained so much from. The biggest gift of all is teaching others what you have been taught. I have done this by inspiring a vast amount of individuals in pursuing their future goals. This is the most important reason why I love DECA. For these reasons and more, I have decided to take the next step. I currently have aspirations to run to become the National DECA North Atlantic Region Vice President at the 2014 International DECA Career and Development Conference this upcoming May.
My Campaign Platform:
For my NARVP campaign, I plan on campaigning by emphasizing the fundamentals that have led my chapter to being so successful on a larger scale. I also want to include:
- the importance of communication amongst associations within the North Atlantic Region,
- rewarding the hard work in the North Atlantic Region at a chapter and state association level for compassionate members and the hard working competitors who devote an astounding amount of work to place at competitions. An example of this would be to build sponsorships for all first, second and third place event winners in each association,
- and by embracing my favorite DECA component which is the DECA Family feel, which DECA gives its members by not just giving the opportunity for students to be a member of an organization, but better yet allow members to be a part of an amazing organization that gives back.
