Daniel's 8th Birthday

Donation protected
This GoFundMe account is for my nephew Joseph Daniel Turya. This past Thursday, July 23rd, was his 8th birthday. His parents gave him a new bicycle. That evening as he was riding it, he crashed and fell, striking the back of his head. His parents, my sister and brother-n-law took him straight to the emergency room. He was complaining of a headache and vomiting. Subsequent CT scan of his head was negative, no fracture or hemorrhage so they sent him home with a diagnosis of a concussion. Throughout that night and the next day, Daniel continued to vomit. The next day, mid-afternoon he began to lose consciousness and his dad rushed him back to the ED. Repeat CT then revealed a subdural hemorrhage with brain herniation. Within minutes, Life Flight was flying Daniel to Memorial Hermann in the Medical Center.
Almost immediately upon arriving at Memorial, Daniel was in life saving surgery. At this point, he was posturing, an ominous sign. The surgeon came right out and told us, if this were an older patient, he would not even attempt surgery. Due to Daniels age, he would at least give it a shot, but outcomes were grime. It was the most terrifying moment of my life!
Miracle number one, Daniel made it through the surgery! He was alive! The surgeon spoke with us and said that although the surgery went well, he had little hope that Daniel would ever walk or talk again. He did not know if he would even be able to come off the ventilator or if he would need a tracheotomy. He was not going to be the Daniel we have loved for his short 8 years, but he was alive!
Miracle number two, by the next morning, Daniel was able to squeeze our hands and give “thumbs up”. Before lunch, he was extubated, breathing on his own. He was even able to say his name! Currently, he is still in ICU but making amazing progress. He will be in for a long recovery though. Doctors say it will be approximately three months before attempting surgery to replace the half of his skull removed to accommodate the brain swelling. From Memorial, doctors want to place him in a rehabilitation center in the hopes he recovers as much function as possible.
I am trying to raise money so his parents can focus on getting him well and home without the added stress of bills. Every little bit will help. If we can raise $3000, that should cover their rent for a few months. They have insurance for medical bills; it is all the other things they will need help with. In addition to whatever you can donate, most importantly, please keep Daniel and his parents in your prayer. Lets keep the miracles coming!

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all the love and support!
