Mariposita, how does your garden grow?

The answer:.with your support (and a lot of love from our Mariposas)!! Over the last 8 months at the Mariposa Center for Girls in Cabarete, Dominican Republic, a garden has sprouted from sand and we've grown young girls into community members that know how to grow their own food, nourishing their bodies and the planet. Now I need your support to keep the garden goodness growing!
At Mariposa, our vision is to develop an evironmental program and "garden classroom" where our girls will learn by getting their hands in the dirt and being in nature. So far, we've had great success and we couldn't have gotten this far without the support of the Madeline Albright Fellowship grant I received upon graduation from Wellesley College (shout out to my ladies back in Beantown!!), Taino Organic Farm, and, of course, immense support from The Mariposa DR Foundation. Though my grant has long since run out, my enthusiasm for teaching has only taken off - like the beans and bananas in the garden! In light of my 23rd birthday (which passed in February), I hope to raise $2,300 to keep me and the Mariposa "garden girls" planting, digging, and turning compost this spring and next year.
Next year, I will return to the Mariposa garden (while also pursuing paid work) with ideas, knowledge, materials, and enthusiasm for another year of transformation and growth!
Ultimately, I am excited about sharing and exchanging knowledge about growing food and expanding environmental conciousness through "edible education" and garden classroom programs that will help sustain communities in Cabarete, the DR, and beyond.
