Amazing news! Makayla's mom just visited us at the school to pick up books and homework because she is being released today! Her mom expressed how grateful they are for every single act of kindness and support. She said that Makayla is doing very well and has said several times to her mother, " I never knew people cared this much." She wants to come back to school tomorrow, but the doctors will determine the best course of action when she is discharged. In the meantime, stay posted for a news report from Fox 5 who spent time with Makayla's friends and teachers today.
Thank you again for all of your support!
We are over half-way to our goal thanks to all of you! Here is a news story about the car wash fundraiser at Makayla's school in the warm sunshine to add more light to her healing journey. http://www.wusa9.com/videos/news/local/dc/2014/02/22/5733521/
Thank you for all of your ongoing support and prayers!
Thank you to everyone for showing such generous support for Makayla! Over the weekend, a group of staff, students, and parents visited Makayla's mom at the hospital. She reported that Makayla is in stable condition, and told the group, "Don't give Makayla's seat away to anybody because she is coming back."
Meanwhile the students and staff are busy planning fund raisers to support Makayla on her healing journey. If you happen to be in the DC area, feel free to join the students and staff for a Car Wash Fund Raiser in the ISE Parking Lot at 3100 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.
We will continue to post updates as soon as we can. Thank you for your ongoing thoughts, prayers, and support.
Eight year old Makayla is out of surgery this morning, but it's only the beginning of a long journey to full recovery. Two Saturdays ago she was promoting her school's optional Saturday Reading Jam to her friends, and today she is recovering in a hospital in Northeast DC after being shot in the upper body near her chest on Valentine's Day as she walked home from her aunt's house. 100% of all donations will be used by Makayla's family to fund her healing and recovery, the costs of which will likely be far above our initial goal. This fund raising effort is being led by the Imagine Southeast (ISE) Public Charter School Family where Makayla is a much loved Third Grader who has been there since Kindergarten. The entire ISE team invites you to join us on Makayla's healing journey. http://www.wusa9.com/story/news/local/2014/02/14/dc-shooting/5490349/
