Help Me Get to Cameroon!
This summer I will be spending the month of June in Cameroon along with six of my classmates from Drexel. We will have the opportunity to work with Dr. Georges Bwelle (a local surgeon and humanitarian leader) along with his team of volunteers who spend every weekend traveling to remote villages throughout the country to provide free health care. Additionally, Dr. Bwelle was one of CNN's Top 10 Heroes of 2013.
Access to healthcare in Cameroon is unfortunately very limited and primarily focused in urban areas. With no medical insurance and a pay-as-you-go system, few citizens are actually able to afford health care. Even government funded vaccinations and medications reach few rural communities due to the lack of transportation infrastructure. Luckily, organizations like Dr. Bwelle's (ASCOVIME) reach out to these communities and help provide the medical support they desperately need. Upon arriving in the villages, my classmates and I will assist Dr. Bwelle and his group in setting up a makeshift "hospital" to provide personal consultations, prescribe treatments and perform necessary surgeries.
Our time in Cameroon is voluntary, but I am responsible for paying for my trip. I am asking for any help (even $5 would be greatly appreciated!) you are able to give. Truly, no contribution is too small and every little bit helps. Thank you all so much in advanced, and I can't wait to share my experiences on this trip with everyone when I return!
Love,
Matt-Tom
