This whole ordeal has been a financial burden to put it lightly. Candace lost her home, she can't work because of all the complications from the coma, and disability is still dragging their feet. Now she has 3 daughters to care for and would never ask for help herself. But I am.
Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
Christmas Day, 2013 I received THE phone call. My sister phoned with what I assumed was my MERRY CHRISTMAS ,I LOVE AND MISS YOU ,call. It wasn't. It was very horrible news. My niece, Candace, was being admitted into ICU with ARDS. ACUTE RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME. DEADLY. And to make matters even more difficult.....she was 5 months pregnant. Not a call anyone ever wants to receive.
Okay, my head is spinning. I kiss my son and husband and fly out the door and get to the hospital as fast as I safely can. As I walk into ICU I'm faced with my beautiful, inside and out, niece. She's telling me it's ok. Not to worry. I'll be ok. Figures. She's consoling me. Right before she is put on the ventilator I get a kiss and a hug. I show no fear to her. I just smile and say I love you baby girl. She's put into a medically induced coma where she remains for weeks.
Hours turn to days which turns to weeks. She worsens every day. At one point she had 7 chest tubes draining her lungs. She's being fed through tubes . We pray and pace a lot. Then we are told she's going downhill fast and to choose whether to save the baby post mortem or not. GOD that was hard. Helplessness is what I feel. As the room fills with doctors and an incubator and Candaces blood pressure drops lower and lower.....we pray. That's when the miracle happens.
Candaces blood pressure rises. That precious doctor turns and looks at us through the window and gives a thumbs up. She's stable!!!
Now for the second miracle......Candace goes into labor a couple of weeks later. Natural labor!!! NOT INDUCED!! Little Chloe Shay Buck came into this world kicking her legs and yelling her head off!!! Chloe is put on a ventilator as well and life support and rushed to ICU at niswonger childrens hospital. Candace will not see her beautiful daughter for a few weeks, but we are with her daily. Soothing her, telling her how much her mommy loves her, holding her when we are allowed to. Posting pictures on Candaces ICU room wall of Chloe. Keeping faith!!!
Candace had to learn to walk again. The ventilator was removed and a trach was inserted. This all started from the flu. They both are improving daily. She's now off the walker and the cane. Chloe has been diagnosed as slow to thrive, but we can deal with that. Chloe turned 1 last week!!!
Candace is still in ICU. The doctors are going to put a smaller tranche in tomorrow and then the speech therapist can hopefully create a leak for air to flow over her vocal chords. Hopefully then we can hear that sweet voice again. I'm certain she has plenty to say. She still has a pocket of infection outside her lungs around her plura that is causing problems now but she shall overcome that too. She's such a strong willed lady. Thank you so much for all your donations but thank you mostly for your prayers and your loving hearts.
Update on Candace Buck...Candace had a chest x-ray yesterday and it was worse. Her CT scan showed a pocket of infection on the outside of her lungs and the x-ray showed an additional air pocket so they removed one chest tube and put three back in. Her white blood cells are high which may be caused by her dormancy. The ventilator is turned down to a low setting. They may do the trache in a few days. Candace is still full of infection and they're changing her antibiotics again. They have been reducing her sedation and she was responsive yesterday. She has been smiling, squeezing hands, and was happy to hear about the baby.
The Infectious Disease doctor came in yesterday asking about family history. Aunt Shay mentioned that only Candace's granddad had tuberculosis, or TB, when Candace was 5. The rest of the family didn't have it but for safety measures was treated for it thirty years ago. As a precaution the doctor placed Candace in isolation for TB. All the tests came back negative and they're waiting on the Infectious Disease doctor to lift the isolation ban.
Baby Chloe has been put on a different kind of ventilator with more of a rapid pattern, 425 breaths per minute. Blood gas was down. She had slight bleeding on the brain that caused a seizure when born but is on drugs to stop any more seizures. They will continue to monitor her brain activity to see if she is having anymore. Another scan will be done in 5 days. She has a slight infection and a little swelling. She's up to 3lbs 7oz and is absolutely beautiful!
my beautiful niece, Candace, gave birth while on life support at JCMC on January 28. Candace went into labor yesterday morning and delivered a beautiful babygirl 8 weeks early. Little CHLOE SHAY BUCK....The baby was delivered in ICU and is now at Niswongers Children's Hospital on a vent herself.
Candace remains on life support but is improving daily. Thanks so much for all the support you guys are giving this family
Last nite the respiratory Dr change the settings on the ventilator to a different breathing pattern ..more of a normal pattern.. She was set to take deep breaths holding for bout four seconds and the vent was set on 65%....when they changed the setting she struggled ...she was working to hard to keep up ..her heart rate went up and her oxygen was dropping...they turn the vent up to 100% ..leaving the breathing pattern the same..this helped her relax and she was able to keep up and not struggle.. Soon she feel back to sleep ..thru the nite they slowly turn the vent down 5% at a time..at 6am this mourn she was at 80% and her vitals were looking good.. She will be having a trac put in today at 2pm ..god bless Candace!!! I love ya babe!
So the Dr's decide to cancel the trac surgery.. She struggled to much last nite with the new setting on ventilator.. Said she wasn't ready..they've change it back to the way it was before "”
Dr decided to take her off the paralytic drug again..it doesn't work on her anymore.. There going to attempt to also take her off of the nitric oxide today to see how she reacts.. If she holds her vitals then they will prob schedule the trac surgery for first of the week..she will be staying in ICU tho..they won't move her outta here until she is no longer on the powerful drugs they have her on..they did a ultrasound last night on her organs ..waiting to hear from the Dr this mourn about it....its nice to see her moving around a little but she seems so uncomfortable and her facial expressions seem so painful ..my heart goes out for her!! Wish I could take her place..take her pain away.. Thanks again for all your kind words and prayers..god hears!! God heals!!
Candace Buck is the mother of 3 beautiful children, one growing in her womb, but is fighting for her life along with her unborn child. She was diagnosed with double pneumonia on Christmas Eve and air lifted to Johnson City Medical Center where she still remains in ICU. Her condition quickly worsened and on Christmas Day she was put on a ventilator, and was placed into a coma. she has now been diagnosed with ARDS, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Her husband is coping the best he can with taking care of their 2 daughters. Taking them to school daily, driving to Johnson City TN from Meadowview, VA to be with his wife, then getting back in time to pick his girls up at 3:00. That has to be difficult enough alone.... add to that the fear for his wife's life daily. BUT.....bills don't cease just because someone gets sick. Any donations would be welcomed to help this young family...Thank You From The Bottom of Our Hearts....May GOD Bless You
