Eagle Project at Dog Park

I am a 13 year old Life Scout
working on my Eagle Project. I have been
involved in scouts since I was six. I
live in Carnegie and have two dogs that enjoy the new dog park. I have been active in community service my
whole life with my scouting family. I
volunteered for over 30 hours to help complete a Shade Tree Inventory for
Carnegie Borough in 2013.
As I looked for an Eagle Scout Project, I thought about the things in Carnegie that I could possibly improve. I like the new dog park, but noticed that the trees that were planted were left unprotected from the dogs. The constant urination on the trees is stressing the trees and they are not looking very healthy. The other issue at the dog park is there are very few benches for people to sit on while their dogs play. I have noticed people bringing their own chairs to the park and thought it would be a good idea to add more benches.
I will be using volunteers to build protective cages for the trees to prevent dogs from urinating directly on the trees. Volunteers will also help to assemble new benches and install the benches at the park. The cages can be removed at a later date after the trees have a chance to become established. I also, thought it would be a good idea if I could find a fire hydrant to mount at the entrance of the dog park. If the dogs would make their initial marking deposits on the fire hydrant, this could protect the trees for years into the futures. My goal is to add 4 benches, 2 fire hydrants and 14 tree cages.
Each part of my project is dependent on fundraising and volunteer participation. I have already found a local business to help with the concrete foundations for the benches to be mounted on and I have the promise of some help from the Borough, but the rest of the finances have to be raised through donations. The final number and type of benches will depend on the money I am able to raise. All donations will be helpful. The more I can raise, the more I can do to benefit my community and the residents.
