I am raising money to attend the National Narcolepsy Network Conference in Denver, Colorado in October 2014. It has been a dream of mine to attend since I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy in April, 2012.
The opportunity to attend the Narcolepsy Network Conference will allow me to meet others that live every day with my condition and will help me to better understand and live my daily life with my condition.
My life with Narcolepsy started after a car accident in January 2012. A second even scarier accident in February made me realize that it was time to stop ignoring the truth in front of me and see a doctor. I went to see my doctor the following week; I was tentatively diagnosed with Narcolepsy on the spot.
I had been falling asleep at the wheel but didn't want to face the truth because I needed to drive to work. Just as I assumed, my license was immediately taken away. I had ignored all of the "quirks" that come along with Narcolepsy because I was too busy worrying about my Mom's current breast cancer diagnosis among other family things. After months of sleep studies, doctor visits, and a treatment plan, I was given back my license.
I was then diagnosed with several debilitating food allergies after they caused a third visit to the ER within the year. I needed to change my lifestyle and I needed to change it NOW. I needed to change my sleep habits and my lifestyle to better cope with my Narcolepsy. By December, I had lost 42 pounds, dropped from a size 12 to a size 2, and lost 13% body fat. I finally felt alive for the first time in a long time. I thank my patient neurologist and other doctors for giving me a new found clarity in my everyday life.
Any and all donations will go directly to the base cost of travel (flying), attendance fees, and lodging costs for the conference and are greatly appreciated.
