Help save the 2014 Catawba Pow Wow

Donation protected
The Catawba Nation of South Carolina requests funding to support the 5th Annual Catawba Pow-Wow tentatively scheduled for April 4-6, 2014. The Catawba Pow-Wow is a yearly event that celebrates our native culture with the community that we live in. The first event was held in April 2010. The event was a huge success drawing drummers and dancers from tribes around the east coast. Each year the event has grown. At the 4th Annual Catawba Pow-Wow in 2013 the event had become the largest Pow-Wow on the east coast drawing 10,000 spectators, 600 drummers and dancers from over 50 tribes, and 75 native vendors selling tribal crafts, jewelry, clothing, and food.

The Catawba Nation is the only federally recognized tribe in the state of South Carolina. The tribe has approximately 2,895 enrolled members; the majority of whom live in the Carolinas. The reservation is located in York County, South Carolina which is a bedroom community to the booming Charlotte metro area. The tribe strives to share their culture with the surrounding community.

The tribe planned for many years in order to start the Catawba Pow-Wow. The venue was ideal since it is a local college's coliseum and bad weather does not halt the event. The tribe has been able to make this event a reality through funding from the York County Hospitality Tax as well as fundraising efforts. In 2014 there will be new restrictions on the Hospitality Tax funds. Many of the activities of the Pow-Wow will be ineligible for funding. The amount of hospitality funding still eligible is less than ¼ of the total funding received in the past. The tribal Executive Committee and Pow-Wow organizers have met to begin planning for the short fall and made a goal to raise $75,000 in order to continue the Catawba Pow Wow.

The tribe is hopeful that they will be able to recruit sponsors so that the event can continue. If the 2014 Catawba Pow-Wow is cancelled the momentum built from the last four years would be lost. Our existing sponsors may also be lost as well if the Catawba Pow Wow does not continue next year. It is so important to make our community aware of the diversity and culture that exists around them. These events bring tolerance, understanding, and exposure that many community members do not receive anywhere else. There is also wonderful fellowship that is created between the members of the many different tribes that attend the event. The tribe hopes to be able to continue this event for many years to come. A donation from you would help us continue to provide this important event for our community.
