Uganda - Standing on the Side of Love

Rev. Mark Kiyimba is a Unitarian pastor in Uganda and and outspoken ally standing in solidarity with the LGBT community in Uganda.
Rev. Mark is currently raising funds to support his May 17th 2015 conference Standing on the Side of Love for LGBT Rights in Uganda.
The conference, to be held in Kampala, is sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Uganda and is timed to coincide with the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. His work is part of the global Unitarian Universalist "Standing on the Side of Love" campaign that "seeks to harness love's power to stop oppression."
More about Rev. Mark Kiyimba. Rev. Mark serves two churches, one in Kampala and one in Masaka. Both churches have schools that serve children of church families as well as impoverished children in the area.
Besides these ministries, Rev. Mark has an articulate and passionate ally for Uganda's imperiled LGBTQI community, especially since the first introduction of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in 2009. That bill eventually became law in 2014, although it was overturned by a Ugandan court later that same year on a procedural point (lack of quorum).
However, the threat to LGBTQI persons remains extraordinarily high. There are Ugandan legislators promising to craft and present a new version of the bill. And political rhetoric, religious bias, and media coverage all work to keeps social stigma against LGBTQI very high.
NOTE: Rev. Mark 's initiatives must change frequently as he responds to changing conditions in Uganda, but all funds raised through this page will go to support his work in Uganda. He aims to empower the LGBT community in Uganda by letting them know they are not alone, inviting them to claim their voices, and shifting the framework of civic discourse to Love.
