Knox Jr. High School‘s 7th Grade Odyssey of the Mind Team qualifies for WORLD FINALS by winning their Region’s competition and placing second in NY State!

Odyssey of the Mind
is an international creativity competition that helps students develop skills in problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, math, language arts, engineering, science, writing, and the performing arts. Each year teams of 5-7 students choose one of five different problems to solve. This year, the team from Knox Jr. High School chose a problem named Triathlon Travels. For this problem, the team had to design, build, and drive a self-propelled original vehicle in an Odyssey-style triathlon. During the triathlon, the team had to use the vehicle to compete in 3 events (curling, jousting and track).  Between the triathlon events, the team had to entertain the audience and the vehicle had to change appearance. The action takes place in a team-created (circus theme) performance that featured the vehicle’s triathlon travels and original characters developed by the team.  They wrote an original script, created all of their own props, scenery, and costumes, and learned about teamwork and creativity along the way!

The Knox Jr. High team, named Energetic Engineers, has represented Johnstown School District since its first year participating in the Odyssey of the Mind program three years ago.  During that time, the Energetic Engineers qualified for the NYS final competition three consecutive years by winning the Region 21 championships in 2016, 2017, and 2018.  This year the 7 member team also came in second place in the NYS finals, earning them a spot to represent the region in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Iowa State University in late May.  At the World Finals, 800+ teams from 26 countries and the United States will compete.  This team has been working on the solution to their problem as a team since September of 2017 while managing their academic, musical, and athletic commitments.

How You Can Help!

In order to attend, these students need to raise approximately $13,000 to get their 7 member team and coaches to Ames, Iowa. This money will be used to pay for registration fees, travel expenses, campus housing, meals, and expenses associated with shipping their vehicle, scenery, props, and costumes.  We are seeking donations to help offset the cost of attending the World Finals.  The Greater Johnstown School District is still new to the Odyssey program, starting only 3 years ago.  They did not budget for such a rare accomplishment  and are actually going through their own financial challenges at this time.

Besides the Go Fund Me account, the students and families are planning many other local fundraising opportunities.  Please watch social media, the school website, and other publicity announcements for upcoming events.  Donations may also be given to one of the team members, coaches, or Johnstown Odyssey of the Mind Coordinator Kristin Meashaw.

We deeply appreciate any assistance you can provide to help our team get to Iowa State University for the World Finals competition. Your donation will help provide these talented students with a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase their talents, meet students from other countries, and proudly represent Fulton County at an international venue.
