The Santa Clara University chapter of Global Medical Brigades is going to Ghana, Africa over spring break at the end of March, 2014! There we are setting up a medical clinic in a village that has no access to medical care to do routine medical and dental check-ups, give out medications from Tylenol and vitamins to hundreds of anti-malarial drugs, and help to educate the community on various health topics.
In 2012, the incidence of Malaria was at at all time high of 16%, or 16 out of every hundred people had contracted the disease (WHO). It is important that we not only cure those that have malaria, but teach them how to prevent it in the future. In addition to malaria, 53% of deaths that occurred in Ghana in 2012 were due to communicable, maternal, perinatal, and nutritional conditions (WHO). We help make the community aware of these conditions, and also provide individuals with the necessary medications to cure any that they may already have.
In order to be able to provide these things to the community, we need to raise $30,000 to bring the right amount of medications, and to leave some behind for the next brigade to use when they visit the same village in 3-4 months. We have been doing multiple on-campus fundraisers, seeking corporate sponsorships, as well as reaching out to friends and family to raise money for our cause. If you can help in any way, it would be greatly appreciated! YOU will not only be helping to improve the health of those less fortunate than us here in America, but also saving lives. It is amazing how a simple toothbrush can make a child incredibly happy, and that is also one of our goals - through the gift of health we can make many others happy!
