What is top surgery?
It's chest reconstructive surgery for female to male transgender patients to give a more masculine appearing chest.
Why?
Some transgender people experience dysphoria with their bodies. Dysphoria is basically like a disconnect with your body. You don't feel like you're in your own body, and even the simplest situations can become uncomfortable. In my case, my dysphoria is the worst with my chest. It's depressing quite honestly to wake up to a body I can't call home. I want to be happy in my own skin and I'm sure this will make me happier.
Aren't you a little young?
My answer to this is simple. I remember telling my mother I wanted to be a boy as young as 5 years old.. I shopped in the boys department, played football with my best friends (boys of course), and fell in love with girls at a young age as well. Everything in my mind has always said "you're a boy." And kids would say it to me as well, of course it was an insult, but when I went home crying to my mom it wasn't because they called me a boy. It was because I knew it's what I was supposed to be. I've known forever, and it's time to be happy. I regret every little thing I missed out on because I didn't want to go put my binder back on and nearly suffocate for a few hours. I want to put the binder in a grave and never revisit it again. Living near the beach isn't exactly easy either with a body you hate. I want to look back on my life in 20 years when I have kids of my own and a family and know I lived life to it's fullest potential. Happiness doesn't know numbers, it's that smile on your face because you're doing something right. If I don't get it now, I will eventually. But I don't want to starve myself of freedom any longer. Simply put, I'm not too young.
