Hi everyone!
We are a group of 11 students at Edgewood College looking to raise money for two projects which we will execute in the lovely state of Chiapas, Mexico. In January, in partnership with UNICH (Universidad Intercultural De Chiapas) we will be traveling to San Cristobal de Las Casas to execute these two projects in two rural communities just outside of Chiapas.
One of the most interesting things about Chiapas is that it is home to one of the Largest indigenous populations in the country, with 12 federally recognized ethnicity's. The state is very rich in natural resources yet they find that they have a majority living below the poverty line.
Now, you maybe asking your self what are the two projects?
The first project is a recycled playground. Corralito is a home to 39 different families (about 252 people) and also where we will be building a playground of recycled materials. With the help of the students of UNICH and the families of Corralito, we will be able to build a fun and creative playground right outside the local school.
The second project is a compost garden. The compost garden project will be executed in the community of Florecilla. For the past two years, 5 students of UNICH have been involved in studying the land and people to identify the needs of the community. The goal of this project is to be able to teach people how to grow their own gardens so they can produce for themselves and eventually sell to other community members, this reducing immigration rates to other cities in Mexico, and the United States.
We would like to Thank you in advance for any contributions. We strongly believe that this project will not only benefit both communities but also us, the 11 students, by gaining first hand knowledge on the peoples and culture of Mexico to better understand the root cause of immigration while also helping two different communities.
