No Means STOP - Journey to Kilimanjaro

Hello & Welcome!

Thank you for dropping by my campaign. My name is Lucy Hamlet a woman living in Toronto Ontario and creator of the Traveling Black Chicks Blog. The blog's mandate is See the World. Be the Change.
It is my dream to climb Africa's tallest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. However a bigger part of that dream is to help raise awareness about violence against women and girls by teaching boys and young men about Consent.

I was recently shocked to learn that the 17 year old young daughter of a very close friend had been recently violated by a young man while she was walking down the street to her doctors office in broad daylight. For this reason and the very disturbing statistics below...

Half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16.

66% of all female victims of sexual assault are under the age of twenty-four (11% are under the age of eleven)

Women aged 15 to 24 are killed at nearly three times the rate for all female victims of domestic homicide.

Recent global prevalence figures indicate that 35% of women worldwide have experienced either intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.

Globally, as many as 38% of murders of women are committed by an intimate partner

My NO Means STOP Journey to Kilimanjaro is focused on raising awareness specifically among boys and young men. The campaign is designed to educate around 3 key points:

1. It is WRONG to Touch or invade a young woman's personal space and body in ANY way without her consent.

2. When trusted with access to a woman's body it should be done with respect and WITHOUT abuse- mental, physical, verbal, emotional or otherwise.

3. Finally & Most Importantly No matter what the circumstances NO means STOP - If you are not invited Do NOT Touch and even when invited NO Means STOP EVERY TIME!

I believe that in order to affect real change EVERYONE especially Boys and Young Men must be educated and empowered with the knowledge and understanding of what violation and violence is and the long term effects on girls, women and society as a whole.

Tropicana Community Services a Toronto-based multi-service organization, provides all youth, newcomers, people of Black and Caribbean heritage and others in need with opportunities and alternatives that lead to success and positive life choices- has officially endorsed my climb and will lend support to the No Means Stop! Climb to Kilimanjaro campaign.

"Raising awareness for Violence Against Women is a cause dear to Tropicana Community Services," says Executive Director Sharon Shelton "Lucy's climb and the intent behind it is in perfect alignment with the work Tropicana already does in the community to help prevent and deal with similar issues. We look forward to supporting Lucy in her bid to summit Mount Kilimanjaro on International Women's Day 2015."

The Impact of your Funds
No Less than 70% of funds will go towards awareness projects including creating an official No Means Stop T-shirt. Funds from the sale of the T-shirt will go directly towards helping to support Tropicana's Violence against Women programs and developing innovative ways to educate youth especially boys and young men about Sexual Consent.

Up To 30% will help finance the trip and my climb and administrative costs (pay-pal fees, etc).

I believe strongly that together we can change the tide of abuse. I hope you will help me in my quest to 'See the World and Be the Change!'

Donations of $20.00 or more will receive a Charitable Donation Receipt from Tropicana Community Services.

Thank you

 for your support!!!
Sincerely
Lucy P. Hamlet
