Rare diseases are among the most serious, life-threatening diseases in the world. These diseases, when combined, affect about 1.7 million Australians. Chances are, you will know someone with a rare disease. Rare diseases typically occur during childhood, cause great suffering, and have NO CURE.
You might think that in Australia, we are doing all we can to develop new drugs and cures to help the sickest of the sick. But nothing could be further from the truth. This is because for most rare diseases in Australia, scientists do not have any information to study.
Before we can develop new drugs for rare diseases, we need to provide scientists with the RESOURCES they need to solve the puzzle. Can you imagine telling two football teams to play a game of football WITHOUT giving them the FOOTBALL?! That's what's happening with rare diseases. Except this isn't a game. These are our children's lives. And everyone knows you can't kick goals without the footy. It doesn't matter how good your players are.
So what's the solution?
1. We need to collect and store blood samples (called a biobank) and clinical data (called a registry) from rare disease patients and their families. This is the footy.
2. We need to make these blood samples and clinical data available to our scientists (the players) so they can conduct laboratory studies (such as genetics). This will tell us what is going wrong and how we can fix it (kicking goals).
3. We need to have a national network of biobanks and registries (this is like the AFL). Only then can we develop new drugs and find cures (win the grand final).
My name is Monique Garcia. My son Nathan has two rare diseases. I'm also a researcher in training (about to start my PhD). Our kids shouldn't have to suffer while we wait for the Australian government to ACT. So, let's get the ball ROLLING and help these kids ourselves.
