Making my social work dream come true!

Donation protected

I have until June 2014 to complete 9 credit hours of arts electives online through Thompson Rivers University in order to be eligible for acceptance into the Mi'kmaq/Maliseet Bachelor of Social Work Programme that is to start next fall. In order to complete the coursework and earn the credits before/by June, I need to register, enroll and get to work by January. My community is tapped out as far as post-secondary funding goes, and so my only option at this point in time is to fund myself.

The kicker: I'm a single mother of two, living on an extremely tight budget. So, fundraising it is!

I have a determined mind, heart and soul to finish what I started while studying at the University of Maine. I didn't choose social work, social work chose me. I believe that upon earning my degree, I will play an instrumental role in changing the way social services are delivered to first nations communities. I want to be apart of improving the system, so that it works to help lift up my people, rather than hold them down.

The $3000 will cover the cost of course and materials fees for:

PSYC 3611 - Social Psychology I
$350.49
$515.13

Total $865.62

SOCI 4311 - Sociology of the Family: Families in a multicultural world
$132.23
$515.13

Total $647.36

PSYC 2131 - Introduction to Childhood and Adolescence
$293.74
$743.19

Total $1036.93

Grand total BEFORE tax, shipping & handling fees

$2,549.91

So, some might wonder why not just take out student loans for this? and my answer is simple...the less debt I accumulate, the better for my children and I. I've accepted the fact that in order to pay my way through the MMBSW Programme, I will more than likely, have no other choice but to go the loans route... but for now fundraising is my most viable option.

For those of you that don't know me personally, if you would like to know a bit about my background (and the hard work that I've already put into my social work studies) & why becoming a social worker means so much to me, please feel free to contact me.

What I will say is, I have faced trial and tribulation after trial and tribulation in this life thus far, and to be here writing today with confidence in myself that I can make a positive difference in peoples lives, is amazing.

Resilience is a beautiful & powerful thing, and I want my people not only know about it, but to be about it.

This isn't just about me,

Woliwon
