Hello everyone! We reached our initial goal of $4,000, which we deemed the minimum amount necessary to produce a quality film on this topic. We have received messages from additional people interested in donating, so we have raised our goal to $5,000 and will absolutely accept these additional donations. We thank you all so much for your kindness and interest in our project, these donations will ensure that we can do an even better job than we initially imagined. Thank you!

Salons and barber shops are cultural symbols of chatter and gossip, a little escape from daily stresses to get pampered and focus on oneself. But what about those who have communication barriers?

For many people in the Deaf community, trips to the salon actually exacerbate stress and anxiety rather than alleviate it. The main character in our documentary, Gabriel, is a hairstylist. Gabriel met his boyfriend, Patrick, at a bar . He noticed Patrick's smile from across the room and knew he had to talk to him. He did not know yet that they would have to find a creative way to communicate. Patrick is deaf and Gabriel didn't know sign language, so they asked the bartender for a piece of paper and a pen. Three years later, the couple happily communicates using sign language. Gabriel now specializes in hairdressing for the Deaf community in DC; a community that he is now a part of.

Many of us never think about the routine tasks that aren't so routine for the Hard of Hearing. But without hesitation, Gabriel crossed a cultural barrier and bridged the gap between two communities. We are two GW students aiming to inspire others to do the same by sharing Gabriel and Patrick's story in this documentary.

Our hope is to screen our film at Gallaudet University, a federally chartered university for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. We are still undergraduates, and don't have the funds to pay our interpreters, freelancers and editors the compensation they deserve.

Please help us share Gabriel and Patrick's story. Many people will be glad that you did.

Sincerely,
Katharina Werner and Riley Kirkpatrick
