My name is Kerry O'Brien Smith. I am a 38-year-old mother of three beautiful children. My divorce to my ex-husband was final two years ago, and since then, I have been in a legal battle for the right to see and spend time with my children.
I am educated, have a Master's degree, am working on my PhD in nonprofit management, specifically for the benefit of battered mothers and victims of interpersonal violence.
Recently, the Court ordered me to pay $17,000 in attorney fees to my ex-husband for defending my appeal for trying to obtain legal rights to see and raise my children. If I do not pay this amount, I will be held in contempt of court and will be sent to jail, never to see my children until I am released. If I am incarcerated, I will have no means to raise the $17,000 for my freedom, and the right to see and experience life with my children. And most importantly, I would not be available to fight for their rights and their protection.
