Children playing game.

Our work is continuouse . We made already some progress. We have 170 children at the school, who come and go depending on the accessable funds and learning space possibility (including teaching under the tree) to manage such amount of students. Mostly they appear in groups of 10-20 students and take turns with their teachers. So when one group is learning other is waiting or coming the other day.
FURTHER DOWN YOU CAN SEE AND HEAR AN INTERVIEW WITH ONE OF THE TEACHERS PATRIC.

I was teaching them about geographical location of POLAND - Europe and UGANDA - Africa, showing where each country is located on the world map,
drawing maps of countries, their lakes, cities, mountains, roads, other countries they are border with.  We were comparing two countries and talking about their different cultures and people. Children were pretty much interested and asked many questions.

We have bought two computers and two monitors for the school administration purpose and for children to teach them basic computer option. Simon has found good used computers, which still look and work pretty good. So far we still do not have access to the internet  in the village but this is much bigger expense.

We made new costs assesments for the school building investment and decide to rise the amount needed up to 37.000Euro.

I have asked few teacher what they need the most in the school for their children. Mostly these things are pretty practical, access to water, food, place to sleep, basic sanitary facility (a bucket of water, soap
WC) which cover basic needs.
Abovementioned things/facilities in Europe we take for granted and in African in Uganda, especially in the village region of Kamuli they do not have access to and they need to struggle and fight for getting access to them.

HELP US BUILDING THE SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE THEY NEED!

December 2015/January 2016, Uganda

Looking from the perspective of time, we can say LIFE GOES ON. For some it goes pretty well, some need to strugle more than anybody else in this world.
Children belong to that group who is the most vulnerable and need support throughout their childhood life.
Not every child has such  possibility. Not every child has parents or parent.  Many children do not even have any relatives to care for them.

The teachers and this special kind of school become the only people and place where orphan children can find protection, care, and hope for better future.

TRIP TO AFRICA AND HORD ORPHANAGE SCHOOL BUILDING IN KAMULI, UGANDA

My trip to Uganda which has started in mid-March 2015 brought the new insight into the school-building project we undertook two years ago. I was finally able to come and visit Uganda to do research and additional work on the ground and not only via internet.

Bike-ride is one of the main sources of transport in Uganda. This is how I was traveling from one village called Kasambira where I’m staying to other village Busiiwa in Nawanende parish in Bugulumbya Sub county in Kamuli district where school is located.

The project of the HORD (Hope for Orphan and Rural Development) orphanage school building is ongoing activity and the next phase of it’s’ development.

Current school buildings

A couple of days after my arrival to Uganda I went to school and I was welcomed by all kids at school. Children together with their teachers prepare the special performance including playing, dancing and singing.

Suzan's introductory speach in front of the kids.

I felt very honoured having such warm welcome greetings.

After official welcome, together with Simon – CEO of HORD and Grace - newly appointed Director of the School, we have had an introductory meeting about school and we prepare the general work plan for next weeks. I also have had a chat with teachers, where I could learn a bit more on their expectations, problems they face and satisfaction they have by participating in this school building project.

Nowadays, there are more children coming to the school as at the beginning stage of the project.  Over 100 pupils are attending classes. The place and building have been changed to slightly better with bigger building which has two small and one big room. There is also more space around. This new environment was possible due to the fact that orphan children (70 at the moment) have been link with other kids who have normal home.  It allowed to expend and gain greater interest from local community and local authorities.

WRITING LETTERS FROM A FRIEND FROM UGANDA

On the very first day at school visit, I was running the full hour English classes for children aged 7.  I also said a bit about Poland, explaining children where it is located, its’ people, customs and environment. The school is one among very few opportunities where they can learn both speaking and writing in English. It was a challenge for me as English is not my native language, but by teaching others we learn ourselves. Kids wrote the welcome letter to their international friends. Some of these letters I’m going to take to one of the school in Poland.

An English class – writing informal letters to friends. Beside it was first time since my primary school that I was using the chalk again and writing on the black board.

I think it may be a nice experience to read from a friend from Uganda from Africa. Well beside this is a real letter, which makes the value even more important. In the future when these children will have an access to computers and internet who knows maybe they make bounds with their international friends, not only from Poland but around the world. For all of us who have internet access on the regular basis either at the computers or at mobiles, it seems very normal to communicate that way, but for these children in Uganda village, having access to phones or internet are something unusual.

LEARNING “UNDER THE TREE”

When the weather allows in the dry season, children study on the new benches “under the trees”. Moreover the teachers gained their own office building, where some books and teaching materials are kept. The school has also the kitchen place to cook a meal.

Many events including classes are organized under the trees. This is one among few places where kids can learn “under the tree”.

Patrick, one of the teachers prepare classes for his group.

Children having class.

Children have two meals during a day. One is breakfast which include milk with tea plus chapatti ( a kind of bread) The second meal “lunch” consists of portion of Posho (this is a type of maize flour) with few chopped tomatoes plus a mug of water. Each day cook and teachers together with older children are bringing water from the well located 30 minutes away. The water is limited therefore it can last for a whole day, however sometimes the new turn has to be done. The food is brought by teachers on motorbikes or support by the locals. Each ride is paid from their pocket. The cost of such transport is approximately 2000 UGX (1000 Ugandan Shilling = 0,34 US dollars ) . The water from the well is for free. The well is maintained by the local community, where each family members, each house is responsible to clean the water on the monthly basis.

After a meal, the few members of a class group are designated  to clean up dishes. On the right side corner of the photo you can see the drying construction for the cup and plates.

Nevertheless despite some difficulties and lack of funds, the project slowly is moving on. We try to introduce all the time something new and make improvements of what already exist. Thanks to these improvements children have slightly better study environment and possibility to learn different subjects but also the practical life activities. Elder children participate in meal and water distribution and cleaning the dishes. Also they help in preparing the classes. Early morning, before classes’ starts, around 7am they arrive to the school and help teachers to clean the venue. School activities starts around 8 AM. The way how children are thought is via singing and reading poems. This is funny and easy way of learning and acquiring knowledge. But this is just a one way among others like dancing and showing the words of the text of the song, or playing in different games when weather allows.

An example of poem, kids are learning at school. Then they sing it in front of other classes during competitions.

The school still lacks many things which can make learning a better and more effective and funnier experience. However still long way to go in getting to the dream project of new school houses, sport venue around, and simple hostels for children in need, as in original plan is.

LIFE AS AN ORPHAN GIRL AND BOY

The life as an orphan boys or girl is extremely harsh in Uganda, Africa. Especially girls are facing the more challenges and are exposed to abuses when there is no proper care taking for these vulnerable youngsters. The children, who does not have proper basic care, food, place to sleep, place of belonging, access to education easily can become of victims in the hands of perpetrators; e.g. employment of youngsters, sexual abuse, selling procedures.   Moreover many of the children suffer also HIV/AIDS, not knowing about that. For the purpose of the health check of its pupils, the HORD orphanage school has conducted one medical outreach made by voluntary nurses. Those identify to be positive have been forwarded to public hospital where they can access free HIV treatment. Twice a month these kids go for a review check just to test CD4 count (HIV/AIDS progression check).

To all of that children, both these identified positive and negative, attend classes together and play together. The medical outreach has also other purpose, to give awareness to children and teachers about HIV/AIDS i.e. how it is transmitted and how to treat it.

Sanitation is other crucial topic for school healthy environment. By now there is very poor toilet conditions and non sewege structure as such. The water is brought in the jerry-cans.

VOLUNTARY TEACHERS

Thanks to better information about this initiative on the local level, we have more voluntary teachers coming to the school. There is recently 10 school teachers’ incl. school Head teacher, heads of departments.  Thanks to the received support from individuals and outer world the children receive one hot meal during a day. The school extended its personnel to cook and guardian.

The head office of the school director and teachers. Books, pens, workshop materials are also store in this place. The picture has been taken by Simon, so you can see the children on the right side of the photo who were checking throughout the little whole in the building, as I was sitting inside the office upon my arrival on the first day.

HORD ORPHANAGE SCHOOL AND FURTHER DEVELOPMENT PLANS

The way to school is not easy for these outside the school area; it is around 1-2 hours for these children who stay outside the school area.
 - We try in the moment to raise funds for bus vehicle and sponsor for a fuel.

Each school in Uganda has uniforms for girls and boys which identify which school they belong to. If person go to the school need to bring a proper uniform organize by parents or children. Unfortunately, the school children of HORD orphanage school do not have yet such uniforms due to the financial reasons. They just can’t afford of having that.
- We are in the search a person who can design the school costumes and then to make them to distribute to children for free.

Moreover we are in need for the:

-          books (if you are able to donate one of your book in English please contact us )

We want to create a library for children (aged from 3 up to 14 years old) and teachers. Therefore any English writing book will be a big support for us.

-          200 paper workbooks (150-200)

-          200 pens and pencils

-          4 footballs

-          2 volleyball

-          2 computers for our management stuff and teachers for teaching-material preparation,

-          10 computers for children for IT classes and internet connection

We spoke with an internet network provider in Uganda, and when we have computers then we can expect a helping hand in providing the internet to the school. This would be a big support for our children and teachers and improve the learning quality

-          2 printers

In regards to the school building project, we still in the process of the fundraising campaign for the implementation of construction building as planned on the design plan.

- We need building materials and architecture project design.
We handle with the local people who can build the schoolhouses with the rational costs estimation.

- We need a better construction for toilet facility and water tank for water access.

Soon you can find in here and on our additional WEBSITE:

Dear HORD Supporters,

The HORD and its volunteers are working hard to get the proper place for education and playground for orphaned children. To all of you who already contributed thank you very much!!!

Our work is constant, and we involve all possible resources to run the place for orphans in the best possible way. Seeing smile and happiness on these children faces, despite their difficult situation, is our biggest reward for our hard work. Moreover we do have your support, which make us stronger in our actions. There is still lot to do but we try our best and we know that such initiative take time.

We want to tell you about our next achievement. Thanks to our friend who is an architect and designed a plan for a school and little hostel for children. We include few pictures of that visual plan. The designed project of the school facilities with its hostel-shelters will have app. two acres of land.
Have a look, is looks really great!

This is our goal! To make such beautiful school facility! To make a dry and safe place for living, playing and learning.

And for comparison this is what we already have :(

Help us to change that school and hostel facilities which we have into that designed project which we plan to make.

We also include information on the initial budget plan for school construction showing what we need and how much it will cost. (The prices are made for this year, so we strongly work on receiving such funding within this year).

This is the basic amount we need to start the work.

We have received also a question if we can receive such materials directly from companies?
Yes, we can but we cannot accept the material directly as we do not have secure and dry place to keep that.

Therefore we need to collect money or got support from different companies who have such materials and could provide it for us, including storage and transport on the request when we will have all things to start the work.

Please see additionally information on the HORD organization in here: http://horduganda.weebly.com/

Remember each penny counts and bring us closer to our goal.

All additional support, advice is more than welcome. If you have any additional question regarding the above budget or project plan pls write. We welcome all kind of feedback so we can all the time improve our actions, make it more transparent and clear.

Help us to get it done this year, so children could move to the new and dry place!

THANKS !!!

Support for Hope for Orphans and Rural Development [HORD] in Kamuli distric, Uganda.

Poverty is everywhere in Uganda, but in rural Uganda, Kamuli district the poverty is paralyzing.Uganda's per-capita income is estimated at $300 USD ($0.82 per day), but those in outlaying areas survive on just a fraction of that, or worse; on nothing at all. The majority of rural people are subsistence farmers, only able to feed themselves and their families. Among the population there are the orphans. If they're lucky, they're taken in by relatives who will provide food and shelter in return for labor. But they cannot afford education. Without basic knowledge, books, newspapers or televisions, they have no access to the outside world. With no knowledge, there is no hope for change.

By providing food, clothing, shelter and medication, HORD helps these at risk people survive. With little education and few vocational skills, the rural poor don't have the necessary tools to improve the quality of their lives. HORD is dedicated to providing the rural poor with access to education, vocational training, and a variety of income generating projects.

How WE can help? What is needed?
- Buying a brick for the school - give children safe place to learn & play!
The school is not right and a healthy learning environment as they are using the church structures as class rooms. Schools in Uganda are very different from those ones in developed countries. There are very few government schools with nearly all schools being self funded by school fees. That is the only way that the children will have any hope of a chance to get an education but the problem still remains that many of these children cannot afford the fees which can be anything from $8 per term upwards.
- Sponsor a teacher
- give children the mentors and earnings to locals! The teachers have a wonderful dedication to the children and their learning and often there has been no money to pay them. They have families of their own to support so the knock on effect is huge, but they keep coming to school each day to teach regardless.
- Buy a book - improve their learning!

Please help me to contribute to building the long-lasting school house and playground for these children. Brick to brick and we can together build something useful and playful for them. The synergy effect works then the best. Even the little gift from each of us can truly change their lives. Each penny counts!

So let's give chance to these children to feel a bit what a real childhood means. Each age has it's rights, and the children have right to play and learn.
