Never breaking a bone again I hope

friday april 13, 2018.

i'm not really convinced the date had anything to do with my dumb luck, it was just a day like most others.  we got home from work, and decided to head back outside for a little bit of a walk.

i tripped and fell, as i do (i'm super clumsy - i'd fallen probably a million times before).

this time, i must have tripped the wrong way, because once i hit the ground, i noticed my leg looked a little weird.  i think we tried to get me to stand up, and that just was not happening.

so, i sat in the rain, holding my leg together, as we waited for emergency services to arrive.  it was very surreal, and the thoughts going through my head included 'is this what a broken leg is like?  i'm so used to what you see in movies...' and 'i wonder if this is how all hemingway's characters felt...'

it's now four months later, and i am nearly comfortable walking without a mobility device.  and, of course, there's bills to be paid.

i'm really thankful for the insurance my employer has provided, as the first surgery cost over $70,000.  there's been another surgery since then, plus follow ups and tons of physical therapy.  not to mention the walker, the scooter, and the cane and all the other peripherals i've needed to purchase to get through this.

the grand total is probably near $100k.  my insurance (am i so incredibly glad for that) has covered probably 90+ % of that, but i've had to cover the rest with credit cards (also extraordinarily happy to have built up really good credit over the past several years to help deal with this unpredictable mess i've found myself in).

i've thought i could handle all of this while still doing normal things like paying rent and bills, and general speaking i have been doing so.  but, i think the time has come when i have to admit i'm starting to hit that point where the medical charges are still coming and i just need help.

the amount i've asked for is a pie in the sky ask, and i don't expect to reach that (and hopefully won't actually need to, as i'm also selling a bunch of stuff to help cover all these costs).  but every little bit helps.

if you know me in person, you know i don't like to ask for help often.  i'm kind of at the breaking point, and will gladly offer you handmade stuff if you pitch in.  if nothing else (since i know some of you are in this same kind of boat with things), please share this plea.

thank you all for everything.
