Raphaelle Penelope Hooper (Penny) was enjoying a normal playful day at her after school program on February 5th, 2015 when the unthinkable happened. A friend noticed that Penny didn't look well and tried to help her back in the school building. As she struggled back into school she began showing signs of what we now know to be a left hemispheric stroke. She became unresponsive, lost the ability to speak and to move the right side of her body and collapsed to the ground.
It's the most terrifying moment any parent or family member can experience, to hear that your child who you would give your life for is unresponsive and fighting for her life. After an initial evaluation in Hobbs she was transported to Lubbock for Pediatric Specialty services. It was eventually discovered that a clot had traveled to small arteries in her brain cutting off blood flow to areas responsible for motor and speech functions to the right side of her body.
Penny is hospitalized and is now alert but continues to have severe weakness on the right side of her body and the inability to speak. She is receiving wonderful care at Covenant Women and Children's Hospital while we try to figure out why this happened and how to best help her recover. She has a very long road ahead of her to recover the ability to walk and speak but her comprehension seems to be intact. Behind those big brown eyes you can see the fire and spunk that everyone who knows Penny is familiar with.
There already are and will continue to be major expenses related to her care away from home and with keeping her mom close by her side in Lubbock, TX. We hope with the help of friends and family like yourself that we can give Penny the best chance at recovery.
