Diabetes Gal Around America!

Donation protected
My name is Angela Bridgman.   I am (virtually) walking AROUND the United States in order to raise money for CR3 Diabetes Association, an organization that supplies low/no-cost diabetes supplies to diabetics who are unable to afford their diabetes supplies.  CR3 works worldwide.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes on March 31, 2015.  I am fortunate that I do not need insulin, but I have learned what the cost of insulin is, and I believe it should be CRIMINAL!

For Type 1 Diabetics, insulin is a life-necessary thing.  Many Type 2's also need insulin.  I believe nobody should be denied access to insulin or other diabetes supplies simply because of their economic situation.

I began to modify my diet, and took up walking for exercise, and I noticed how well the walking was keeping my own blood glucose numbers in check.  Then I heard about "Fat Guy Across America" and I got inspired!

What would it take, I asked myself...to walk (virtually, of course) AROUND the United States?  I found the statistics I needed from atlases and determined it would take 19,017 miles - this would include Alaska and Hawaii, as well as the continental United States.

So, for fun, I started logging my walking, using a device that measures my walking using GPS.  Then I got thinking again about how I felt the cost of diabetes supplies should be criminal, and wondered if there was a way I could help others, while helping myself with exercise?

To that end, I have teamed up with CR3 Diabetes Association.  CR3 Diabetes was founded by Charles Ray III, who had his own struggle with the financial burden of diabetes.  The National Ambassador for this organization is star quarterback of the Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahwaks, Russell Wilson.  Russell is also a former NCState Wolfpack alumnus.

I realize, of course, that without money, there is no research, no new medications, no new treatments, and perhaps - one day - even a CURE!  But there has got to be a better way to get the money for this than pricing the supplies so many diabetics around the world need out of reach!

Every cent raised by this campaign will go to CR3 Diabetes Association, who does this very important work.  In fact, only THEY will have the ability to withdraw any funds from this campaign.  The money raised will help support their work of supplying low/no-cost insulin, insulin pumps and other diabetic supplies to un-/underinsured people around the world, so that they may have what they need to manage their condition.

I will post weekly updates on my blog, and notify here every time an update is posted.  You can find my blog at diabetesgal.wordpress.com

I started this walk on July 9, 2015, on the NC/SC border.  It seemed a good place to start since I live in North Carolina.  I have - as of August 12, started to virtually walk along the Outer Banks of North Carolina...so far achieving 167.18 miles.

I am looking for people to donate either a one-time amount - or sponsor me for a set number of miles...in an amount per mile, per hundred miles, or even per thousand miles, whatever works for you!  You can sponsor me the whole walk, or just a part of it...even just the part that goes along your state if you wish.

Nobody should have life-necessary medication be out of reach because of finances.  It should be criminal, and I was brought up to believe that, in America, we could do better!

I also seek to be an example and inspiration to diabetics everywhere, by showing there is NOTHING we cannot do!  I wish to combat the untrue and unfair stereotype that diabetics are "fat, lazy slobs" that brought this on themselves.  Modern research has shown that, while four out of five Type 2 diabetics present as overweight or obese, that the overweight/obese condition did not CAUSE the diabetes, but rather is an effect of the diabetes.

We can, of course, manage our condition better by losing weight and exercising, and that is why I am doing this.  Since my diagnosis I have now lost 58.5 pounds.  I have gotten my blood glucose levels under control.  But there is no cure, I will always be diabetic.

Join me and help me to help others while I help myself!
