Help Immigrants in Denver Apply for DACA

Have you heard about DACA? Did you know that it can change
the lives of young undocumented immigrants in America? In August 2012, Pres.
Obama signed a policy called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which
allows 1.4 million undocumented immigrants ages 16-30 who have lived in the U.S. for five
years to apply for a social security number, a worker's permit, and a driver's
license. Since then, applicants have opened their first bank accounts, found
better jobs, applied for college, and escaped the fear of deportation. It has
given young people hope while they await immigration reform.
Sounds great, right? So why have only half of those eligible for DACA applied so far?
The answer is money. The processing fee alone costs $465. With legal aid to push their case, it can cost up to $1,500. The families we work with at the Jubilee Center often have three or more kids, and $4,500 is impossible for a household below the poverty line, leaving them with no way out. So, this summer, we began a small campaign to help candidates apply and pay for DACA. Starting just from relationships in the neighborhood, we've helped 23 young people. As word spread, we learned how much northwest Denver needed DACA assistance. We've decided to expand our work to meet this need.
That's where you come in. We're starting a legal advocacy fund of $20,000 to help the next 20 candidates apply for DACA and take the next step in their lives. We believe people out there want to change the lives of immigrants. They just need a way to take action. While politicians talk about fixing our broken immigration system, we have grassroots work to do helping young immigrants break out of poverty and become respected civic voices in their community. So please give what you can to help get this fund started. Every dollar goes straight toward a candidate"˜s DACA case. Every dollar counts toward a better future.
