Meet Lauryn. Randy and Laura's only child. A wonderfully spirited 8 year old with a zest for life, family and laughter. Recently diagnosed with Neuroblastoma.
While typical treatments for Neuroblastoma include surgery to remove the tumor, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, Lauryn's next year of life will also include surgeries and bone marrow transplants because the neuroblastoma has spread.
Meet Randy. 46 year old father of Lauryn. Suffered a heart attack Sept. 12, 2013.
Only 30 days away from having his own health insurance activated through his new employer (he works at a hospital) when he suffered the heart attack. No coverage for him.
Meet Laura. Lauryn's mom and Randy's wife. Takes temporary leave of her job (without pay) to provide care, support, time and effort to Lauryn. A lot of time is needed to run Lauryn to the hospital for treatment 5 days a week, school (if she is well enough to go) and general care.
Lauryn, luckily, has health insurance provided by her mom's employer. However, because of the length of time (about 1 year) and number of treatments she needs, there is sure to be additional expenses.
I.E. gas to and from the hospital (70 miles a day X's 5 days as week), food to eat at the hospital, communication expenses, loss of work etc....
