Updated follow up for all our donors. The family kept up with the Caring Bridge site for those of you who did not get to read I am adding a brief post. During Andrew's tests at Mayo before surgery Andrew's Pediatric Cardiologist found that he had some scaring on his heart and they came to the conclusion that he would benefit from an internal difibulator/pacemaker. This was implanted at the time of surgery. After surgery the parents were told that this surgery was not a fix but a source of relief for him.(possibly a temporary one). He has expressed the fact that he can breathe easier and he doesn't feel his heart pounding like he use to do. The parents are learning about his ICD and what they need to do to monitor him. We appreciate the safe home-coming of Andrew and we continue to support his family with love, and continuing donations for Andrew's for his care. Bless all of you for your continued support for Andrew. May you know that your support and love was truly appreciated.

This is Andrew. He is a five year old boy that has Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). This is a disease that affects the heart muscle, causing the muscle to enlarge, or "hypertrophy."

Normally, this condition is diagnosed in children in their teens. In Andrew’s case he was born with severe hypertrophy. He has been evaluated every 6 months since birth. Medication helps his heart to pump as efficiently as possible but he has reached the point where open heart surgery to remove excess muscle has been recommended. This procedure is called a septal myectomy. Andrew will be traveling to the Mayo Clinic early 2014 for further tests and surgery. He will be in the hospital for 5 to 7 days after surgery and will be home recovering for 8 to 10 weeks. A teacher will be coming to the home to keep Andrew up-to-date. Because Andrew is so young, it is likely that he will need this procedure done again in the future. This heart condition is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. Eventually, Andrew may need a Heart transplant. For more information on this condition, go to www.4hcm.org.

Andrew is a bright young man in Kindergarten. He has a love for football. His favorite team is the “Washington Redskins” although he loves all NFL and College teams. His other loves are Monster Trucks, SpongeBob and Patrick and playing on his drums. He loves to be active, and his parents worry all the time if he is being over active. The doctors say to let him enjoy all he can. Andrew is the youngest child of 4 and he loves his siblings dearly. Thank You for supporting.

Andrew's  surgery went well.  He is still in ICU and taking each day slowly . Please continue your support and prayers.

Our friends Stacy & Michelle Fowler gave us a donation for Andrew. They are praying for Andrew every day and his family. Michelle actually made the hats we sent for Andrew & Beth.

Although I am adding $50 to the gift I gave on my wife Susan's behalf for Christmas, this gift is from an anonymous donor who just gave me the $50 for Andrew while I was in a shopping line in the grocery store. I was purchasing a heart shaped box of candy and other heart related items to use to tell Susan about the donation on her behalf and I was explaining the items to the cashier about Andrew and the gift. Another gentleman in line heard me explain, took out his wallet and gave me $50 to donate to Andrew. He said 35 years ago when his son was very young, his son needed brain surgery for a tumor and people helped them to raise the necessary funds for the surgery. He asked me to make sure the money got to Andrew. For me, this was one of my best Christmas moments ever and although this $50 will help, I suspect the spirit behind the gift may be even more important for him and his family!

My wife Susan is Andrew's Kindergarten teacher. She and the rest of Bass-Hoover elementary school have been so happy to be able to help Andrew that for Christmas this year, I thought I could not give her a better gift and honor her kindness and spirit, then to give this small contribution to Andrew and his family. Merry Christmas! Carl
