Perhaps you've heard that
print is dead. We haven't.
(Maybe you read that somewhere?)
Even if we had, it's unlikely that we would have listened. We at Monkeywrench Books love the printed word. In this relentless, smudgy world that is slowly sucking the physicality out of everything, replacing our experiences with those mediated by touch-screens and birds of unimaginable anger, we side with the smell of paper and the weight of a book in our hands.
In fact, some of us at Monkeywrench Books have been daydreaming of sending our own printed objects out into the world. There is much to say in a town like ours and we'd like to help people say it.
The first book in this series of experiments will be titled Impasses. It contains five pieces that were originally presented at a conference on Recent Anarchist Theory, organized by the Austin Anarchist Study Group earlier this summer. More generally, it can be considered a documentation of the study group as anarchist practice, as the book also includes a collection of manifestos and reflections on projects that were formed during or emerged from the study group itself. We're teaming up with the local publishing project Pallaksch Press and Berkeley based Little Black Cart to put the thing together.
Our scheme: all proceeds from Impasses will go into a fund that will be used to publish our next book. And then the next.
So far, we've got a little money set aside and a manuscript. However, this might not be enough to make it happen. We're looking to raise an additional $500 to help offset the initial costs of printing. This is where you can help. If you give us your dollars, we'll have what we need to make a pretty book full of exciting ideas.
