Saving Miskwaki

Donation protected
WE MADE IT!!! Actually, we went over goal. There's no question that Miskwaki will be able to stay. Thank you, so very much, to each and every one of you who donated, shared the link, told somebody about his story, rec'd and promoted comments about this elsewhere, or otherwise helped us make it!

Some of you may remember the story of how Miskwaki found his way to us.

When he showed up here, starving, dehydrated, sick, too weak to hold his own head up, he looked like this:

A month with us, and he looked like this:

Now, he's fully integrated with the other horses. He's got a long road ahead of him yet, though: Long-term malnutrition and dehydration have caused episodes of colic, founder, and an incident of hypoglycemic convulsions. He was so infested with worms and ticks that it took a huge toll on his health, and four months later, he's only now beginning to lose the bloat associated with the worms. The ticks and malnutrition created an inflammatory situation that damaged his right hip.

Lack of trimming and hoof care, combined with malnutrition and founder, nearly destroyed his feet. They're on the mend, but it will be months yet before he'll be sound enough to ride.

He also has equine PTSD, and I'm working with him on a daily basis to desensitize him from the abuse and neglect that he suffered. He's made huge strides, but the only person he really fully trusts is me [Aji].

He's a happy, increasingly healthy, beautiful, sweet animal. But to stay that way, he needs to stay with us.

Wings and the soon-to-be-former owner are negotiating a purchase price right now. The maximum will be $1,000, so I've set the total at $1,100 to cover gofundme fees and incidentals. If they reach agreement on a lower amount, anything over that will be used for Miskwaki's feed (he's already into us for $700 worth of hay alone), grain, supplements, veterinary care, and farrier bills. He will have some new vet and farrier bills in the coming months that may be pretty steep.

We have about a week to come up with money, to keep him safe here with us. Otherwise, he returns to his previous situation to be sold to the highest bidder.

If you think, as we do, that Miskwaki is worth saving, please consider kicking in a few bucks.

Chi miigwech from Miskwaki and from me; ta'a from Wings.
