Please Help Me Study Abroad in JAPAN!

My name is Sarah Croley. I'm 20 years old, and I'm from a small town in Ohio that I love very much. I'm a Junior at The University of Mount Union in my hometown of Alliance, Ohio. At Mount Union, I'm currently double-majoring in Communication and Japanese Language, and I absolutely love it. I'm also involved in Marching Band, Concert Band, Women's Chorus, Musical Theater, GSA, and Diversity Council to name a few. When I graduate, I want to get involved with The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program in order to teach English to Japanese students. Following this, I want to become involved with news correspondence and translation. I really hope to be able to make a positive, international difference in the world in some way.

It's been my dream to study abroad in the beautiful, unique, and timeless country of Japan ever since I was a little girl. I became enthralled with everything Japan had to offer at a very young age (the history, the music, the fashion, everything!), and, over the past 15 years, my passion for and interest in the Japanese language and culture has grown so much. Studying abroad in Japan would give me the chance to see and understand the Japanese culture firsthand in a way I would never be able to otherwise. It would allow me to speak with native Japanese speakers to improve my language skills, and most importantly, give me an opportunity to have the most rewarding experience imaginable. It would also let me be able to come back to the United States with a different way of thinking and raise intercultural and international awareness and acceptance where I live.

Finally, this upcoming spring semester, this dream can become a reality. If everything works out, I'll be studying at Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata, Osaka-shi, Japan.

Although studying abroad has been proven to be a rewarding, worthwhile experience that colleges say every student should partake in if given the opportunity, studying abroad isn't cheap. Airfare, housing, tuition and fees for Kansai Gaidai University itself, food, and necessities all cost a pretty penny that unfortunately, my family and I could never afford.

We've been hit with a lot of financial hardship over the past few years, but somehow, we've been blessed enough to be able to manage and still send me to school, thanks to scholarships and loans. My parents would love to help me follow my dreams, but there's no way they can without breaking bank. In 2006 when I was in 7th grade, my father was diagnosed with Emphysema and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), given numerous medicines and was put on 24-hour-oxygen.This forced him to quit his job and be put on Social Security Disability and my mom is a 24 hour caretaker to him. Over the past 7 years, he has gotten much worse and needs a double-lung transplant, which will be a very costly procedure. I have been working at a Hawaiian Ice Shop during the summer, but the wages I have made there come nowhere close to making a dent in the cost to study abroad.

If I were to be given this wonderful, once in a lifetime opportunity, know that I will definitely pay it forward. When I graduate from college and get a good job, I'll help out at least one other student who is in my position currently: Someone determined, driven and passionate who would absolutely love to experience another culture and study in another country, but lacks the financial ability to do so.

Any and all money donated will bring me one step closer to living my dreams and studying abroad at Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata, Osaka-shi, Japan in the Spring Semester of 2014. Thank you so much for your time, and please help make my dreams come true! God bless!
