We took laylas prosthesis out the other day because she started complaining again. Inside her eye looks very white. As I mentioned before I'm worried that her prosthetic is rubbing against her eye tissue and making a hole so that her implant is exposed. I expressed my concerns to her ocularist (the person making her eye) and she wants me to send a picture to her. I hope there is no hole, if so she will need surgery to fix it and that's another trip to NYC. considering we just got back that would really stink!! say a little prayer please and I promise I'll update as soon as I know.

Laylas eye is much better today. The swelling has gone down and it doesn't look as irritated. Whatever it was must have worked it's way out. Last night I caked her prosthetic with tobradex , an eye ointment that is used to treat infections) and today she has not complained much. Weird this is the first problem she's had since April when she was fitted.

So I have to tell you all.. I was contacted today by the GoFundme public relations rep. They are looking for powerful stories to share with the media and Layla's jumped out at them. She asked me if I was interested in sharing Layla's story in a press interview... OF COURSE I AM!!! before Layla was diagnosed with unilateral retinoblastoma, I had no idea this disease existed. I believe in my heart, that if more parents or people in general knew what to look for , a lot less kids would lose their eyes and vision might be able to be saved for a lot of these children. I want to express my sincerest gratitude for all of you who have been donating to help Layla and our families travel expenses . Without you, this probably would not have been possible. I hope I can raise awareness about this awful awful cancer. God Bless.

In October of 2012, just 5 days before Layla turned two years old, she was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma (a rare cancer found in the eyes of children) in her right eye. We traveled to New York to see one of the best doctors in the country for RB, and on Halloween her eye was removed along with the tumor and a silicone implant was put in its place. In December, Layla had a procedure to check to see if the retinoblastoma had traveled anywhere else in her little body. The doctors at Childrens Hospital Pittsburgh performed a bone marrow test and spinal tap. In February, due to complications of fitting a prosthesis, Layla underwent a two hour surgery to remove scar tissue that all the doctors assumed was a reoccurance of tumor, and to fix her implant at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. She wore an eye patch for 6 months because of these complications. In April, she was finally able to get a prosthetic eye. Genetic testing has proved that the cancer was not sporadic and that Layla has the mutation of RB in 30% of her blood cells. This means she is at a higher risk to develop soft tissue sarcomas, melanoma and breast cancer as she grows older. Every 4-6 weeks we travel from West Virginia to New York City to have her eyes checked for new growth of tumors. The doctors at MSKCC put her under anesthesia and take scans of both of her eyes. Because her mutation of RB is mosaic and not sporadic, her other eye is at risk to develop this cancer also. These trips are essential in providing Layla with the best medical care possible. Our bills are mounting and our travel expenses range from $1000-$1500 each time we visit New York. Please consider donating if you are able, every little bit helps. God Bless.

Dear Missy, Just learned of Layla this morning. I am sending up prayers for you all now along with other friends who are praying, too. You might enjoy staying at the Penington House in NYC. It is near Union Square and very affordable. The residents are Quakers and fabulous chefs. Meals are served family style and are out of this world. They used to have a parrot in the living room who is pretty funny.
