Nina's Recovery After Hit & Run

Donation protected
Nina is my cousin who came to live with me 21 years ago when her grandmother died. It has been my honor to have been entrusted with her care.
Nina was hit by a motor vehicle while crossing the street on the night of July 4th. The driver made the decision to not stop but to leave her lying in the middle of the road. Her life was forever changed that night.

Nina's Journey...

It has been three weeks or a lifetime since the day that changed Nina's life forever.

Nina has been through so much already. She has had eight surgeries already including:

- A drain cut to release blood from behind her right eye
- A titanium plate below her right eye to keep her eyeball in place
- her cheekbone was put back together
- her broken nose was repaired with the exception of the tip of it
- her elbows refill on her right arm
- three surgeries to rebuild her tibia and to save her right leg from amputation

As if those aren't enough she has more to look forward to including:

- A fourth surgery to save her right leg is scheduled for Tuesday, July 28
- A probable surgery to clean up the bleeding and closing the drain on her right eye after the swelling goes down
- pending the outcome of an ultrasound that is scheduled for Wednesday she may have a surgery to restore some very limited vision to her right eye otherwise she will have no vision
- again after the swelling goes down in her eye she will have a surgery to tighten the lower eyelid saw her I can close properly it will also help make her I look somewhat normal
- A possible surgery to repair the tip of her nose
- A very probable surgery to replace her right knee in the not too distant future
- depending on the outcome of the grafting that they've done on her right leg there may be more surgeries to try other methods of grafting in order to save her leg

It seems that whenever one thing seems to be getting resolved another thing is discovered. For instance:

- when her cast was removed from her arm it was discovered that she has a possible ligament or tendon issue on her forearm that causes her bones not to move in unison. This is very rare. We will know more once we see the surgeon who performed her elbow surgery
- at this point we do not know if her hearing was damaged as she has not had her hearing checked since this happened
- there may be a possibility of surgery needed on her tibia as they had to do many things to put it back together and so it may need some adjustments
- A possibility of some dental work needed (however we are hoping for it to just be a cavity)
- almost certain arthritis in her leg

Where are also looking at quite a few other things that we have to deal with including:

- ongoing physical therapy and dr appts
- special accommodations made for living area with the possibility of having to relocate because of the steps in our current home
- income loss for Nina
- income loss for caregiver Joice
- emotional suffering needs as Nina is learning to deal with what has happened to her.

Nina is a fighter. She has had to fight all of her life. In her words "I try try try." She is every therapist's dream and will do everything in her power to win this battle. Not trying her best is not even a question for her. We just need to be certain that she will be able to have the treatments and/equipment she needs to have the best quality she can have for her new life journey.

Nina has no animosity toward whomever hit her. Her only concern was that she'd vomited on the pants of someone who'd helped her that night. She is truly pure in heart.

Good thoughts and prayers are just as welcome as any monetary contributions as they have given her wings to fly thus far. She is doing everything in warp speed but still has a long road ahead.

Thank you for taking the time to consider Nina's plight. God bless you in your journey. Joice
